I must possess a new splash screen
|
I like yours better
|
Thanks. You guys are the best.
|
How long does it take before the splash screen is shown again? What I mean is, after doing this modification, the Nav performed a reboot. Once it was back, I saw my new splash screen. However, shutting the car off and waiting a few minutes doesn't seem to bring it back. It just goes straight to the menu or map. Beedeeman told me on another forum that the car must sit for some time, and then the splash screen returns when you open the door or switch on the ignition. Question is, how long is that length of time? I wanted to show my wife the mod today, and when it didn't work, she looked at me funny.
|
The i-bus has to go to sleep, which can take 15 to 20 minutes.

Sorry. Once you unlock the car the Nav computer is in bootup mode and loading the OS. You have to give it a few seconds ~10secs and then open the door, it should appear then.
Do not immediately turn to ignition 1 or 2 after unlocking and opening door it will go straight to Map or Menu. |
This is truly too cool!
Does anyone know where to get (or do you have) the BMW font used to write the model designations, ie. M5, X5, 4.4i, 540i, etc, etc... I've been searching but can't find anything. Imagine the possibilities... |
Quote:
I went ahead and pulled fuse #7. After that, then the splash screen came back up. I wonder what's going on? My splash screen is about 29K, and it displays just fine. The rest of the system seems to be working as well. Any ideas? |
Quote:
Also, reading on the BMW Treff forums that V26.09a is bad for Nav units. It apparently destroys the majority of them. I would try to get the Nav unit recoded since your system has been flashed to V26.09a once already. |

Can anyone help me out? I currently have v26 and I want to upgrade to a new splash screen but I have no idea how to do so. PM me if you're interested in making a small splash graphic for me and posting the correct image file? Monetary payment will be provided.

Good News, Bad News

So far all of my screens have been <20kb, I created a 48kb animated gif:
Attachment 5268 and though it loaded, OS-9 would not animate it. Bad news for animation (limited to 1 frame), good news for larger hi-res graphics on the nav. |

Hello again!
Well done to the group for getting this far. I love this reverse engineering. No problems on my 2004 Mk-IV system in Australia. Still getting the same redraw glitches but it has been like this since version 26. Apart from the image I created with the roundel in my second post, here is my effort. :) I made this image from scratch after looking at an iDrive startup screen. It looks great here in a web browser on the PC, but the colours look dreadful on the Mk-IV's screen - it almost looks grey. I think we need to find out which colours are able to be displayed by the navigation computer. The splash screens don't quite look as you'd expect them to... There must be a colour table somewhere listing 'legal' colours... Paul Martin Australia |
Quote:
I'd guess that the appearance on the monitor is more likely due to poor colour rendition on the monitor itself rather than a limitation in the colours that can be stored in the GIF. The car monitor requires different characteristics to a PC monitor. For example, one of the prime characteristics must be that it is visible even in strong light and this probably compromises its ability to accurately display colours. You coluld try increasing the saturation of your image, so it looks too colourful on your PC monitor. |
Quote:
That's what I thought initially, however the TV displays wonderful colours and so too does the Nav really, menu colours & the map display (particularly post v26). I tried increasing the saturation of the GIF but it still looks dreadful! Not to worry. The great thing about all this tweaking is that we can at lease switch the T26.09A for the old ==BMW== logo :) Paul Martin Australia |
Paul,
Unless I saved your image incorrectly it looks like it may not be in the correct format. I've changed it to index colour and flatened the layers in the image it looks the same on the PC: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard...W%20iDrive.gif but it only has 256 colours, try it instead. |

http://www.linquist.net/temp/navboot6.gif |
|
I tried the procedure described on page 17. I started from the V26.00 image. I replaced the splash screen with the ///M logo, replaced the navboot file in the image, burned it, entered the disk in my navi unit. I got the message that new software would be installed, blablabla, reboot, ...might take up to 6 minutes... and a few seconds later (certainly less than 20 seconds), I got a message that the update was successful, and that I could remove the disk and press OK. So far so good.
NOTHING CHANGED????? Still got the old splash screen, the version info I entered is not found (just reads 4.1.60 or something like that). I entered the cd in my pc, copied the navboot file to my hard drive, checked the splash image again with the gifextractor, and I really did burn the correct image. What did I do wrong? Thx! edit: @M3QP: working on that file. As soon as it is finished (and it works), I'll upload it somewhere, and post the link. |

It won't update if the version is the same as the one already installed. |

Gif extractor loading problems

Just figured out the problem you are having with the Gif extractor and security warnings. Turn off any fire walls. Go to internet properties, click security tab, Click 'Custom level' box, At the bottom of this window set the 'Reset to:' option to 'low' Then click 'Reset', Now go to the series of options within the window above and go to the first item: '.Net Framework-reliant components, Run components not signed with identicode'' Click 'Disable' Click OK Close down properties and go back to the link - you should now be able to down load the GIF extractor and run it without problems.:) |

hi experts,
I read all posts about v26-09 and I did it. Thx to all who contributed. First of all I burned V26-09 and installed it. Worked very well and I enjoyed it. The more I read the more I feared to destroy my MK4. Next step: back to v26 and use birdview as well without possibility to change. Today I had to to leave my birdview because I have visit to my dealer. I changed to normal view in order not to loose my warranty. No problem with that. No difficulty to restore. V26 and v26-09 are burnt and easily to be reinstalled. Much easier for me would be to have v26-09 in use, enjoy it and change in case of visit to dealer to v26. So I cant manifested as to be a betrayer. There are so many posts how to change the image from v26-09 to whatsoever, but for me as a fool it is important: is there anywhere a link to upload v26-09 with the normal ==BMW== logo? ?????MFG SLIA |

I have the 26.09a and today my nav hung during bootup. It displayed "Please wait..." and didn't do anything. I couldn't change the screen, nothing.
I pulled the fuse #41 and put it back in after 5s. The nav booted, showed the custom logo and hung again. I pulled the fuse again and then it started correctly. I'll watch that issue and maybe go back to V26 with perspective patch. Tino |

It is a .NET problem.
I cannot display the image though it should be imported properly. I didn't figure out why it cannot display this. I have to check MS tech sites to a solution perhaps. Tino Edit: It's solved. Download the newest version and check "Read "complicated" gifs" before clicking "extract". I wouldn't use the option if not neccessary. |

Figure out Font type for BMW type designation
1 Attachment(s)
Hello guys,
its just a unbelievable work that was done here. Right now I've installed the upgraded version with splashscreen customized by RichardP1. It works in my '02 E39 since Tuesday just fine - no problem at all. So, there is no reason for me at the moment to install the hacked version of the V26. Yesterday I tryed the 1. time to create my own splash and had this outcome. But I'm not satisfied with the result - It would be much better, if the type designation "530i" can be inserted as true type font rather then as picture. Is there any body out there who knows with font type has to be applyed for BMW type designation? Kindest regards, Matthias |

Issues
Hi, I believe you will need to address two issues if its anything like the embedded software I have been involved with in the past.
1. If the gif is a different size than the original you will probably get errors as the linked image probably requires different modules all at previously assigned places - set at image link time. I think you would need to make the image identical size to get around this with the same byte alignment also. 2. There is no doubt a checksum across the whole image to ensure the Nav hardware doesn't start running corrupt s/w and therefore die in a nasty way. This I dont think you can get around other than to work out how the checksum is done. Presumably on the other thread where some mods were done this has been solved (?) Good luck ! cheers, Seedar. |
Quote:
This has been covered already. When people first started replacing GIF images, I had exactly the same thoughts.. that there had to be a checksum, and indeed there is. The "navboot" file, which is the one being modified is developed for an operating system called OS9000, and the "navboot" file is made up of modules, some of which are images, some of which are files.. In OS9000 these are all lumped together in one large file. Each module had a header, module length, type, name, and finally at the end of the module a 24-bit checksum. Eariler in these posts you'll find a GIFExtracter and replacer. This program locates the image modules in the "navboot" file. When using this program you'll notice that the main image module is 133Kb in size, even though the image stored in the module is only 4Kb in size. The GIF in this module can be replaced by one up to that size, using the program, and the checksum is recalculated, ensuring that the sat nav computer correctly loads the software.. So you're completely correct, but it's all been done already.. NavMan |
Quote:
Now how do we define a "complicated" gif ? |
1 Attachment(s)
Any idea why the attached image won't work?
I did check the 'read complicated gifs' and 'ignore file size' checkboxes. |
i would assume u can define it as gifs that cause the
type of reaction that you got when attempting to replace the gif.:dunno: |

Like this item, it's great! But....anyone can help me out?
Hi all,
Following this forum and reading it with big interest, I wanted to update also. But my problem is: I have a Rover 75, with MK3 system, and it is not updateable. I tried 6 different cdroms. Now I learned from a Rover forum, it has been specially made for Rover and is very difficult to update, I have to write a other flash into the MK3. Anyone have experience with this, or anyone can sent me a copy of the flash rom of a BMW MK3? I hope you all don't mind joiing this forum as a Rover driver. Thanks! |

Do what I did, replace it with a proper BMW MK3 or MK4 Then sell the Rover one on Ebay, you may even make a profit as sometimes for some crazy reason they sell for more than BMW ones which is silly because the firmware is so out of date it does not even offer split screen. rgds Keith |
Has anybody successfully altered the Splash-Screen for an MK3? In the 7-series forum a few guys have tried for their MK3 but only without success... I can't check since I'm on MK4 only...
