Radio Service Mode - Too elusive for me

I have been trying to get into Radio Service Mode but just can't get that service menu. I have found three great postings with three different methods. Which seem to get their steps from BMW technical document tp://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/154948/.

When I follow the steps in the firsts 2 examples by holding the SELECT button I breifly see on-screen 'PRES ON'. After it disappears and press SELECT again I breifly see on-screen 'PRES OFF'.

Any suggestions how to get into Radio Service Mode? I have a MK3 SW3-1/63.

1. Get in car close doors, turn key to Position 1 or 2.
2. Hit the accept on the Nav system (make sure the radio is off).
3. Pull the key out and put it in Pos 2.
4. Turn radio on
5. Hit "Select" key and hold it until the display changes or flashes and becomes the menu screen.
6. Turn right hand computer knob one position right or left.
7. You are in: You now see the service menu appear with the radio serial number.
8. Use the < > keys to scroll through the functions and the 1 and the 2 keys to make selections for each setting.

1. Turn on your car
2. If the radio is on, turn it off
3. Turn the radio on
4. Immediatly push and hold the SELECT button until the radio serial number shows (5 to 10 seconds)
5. Use the < > keys to cycle through the menu

1. Turn on engine (or key to position II)
2. Push the MENU button, then select SETTINGS menu.
3. Push and hold the MENU button while in the SETTINGS screen for about 5-10 seconds. The SERVICE MODE menu will appear. (Let go the MENU button)
4. Select ONBOARD COMPUTER menu.
5. The SW version will show you what NAV version you have.

What is the difference between Radio Service Mode and Service Mode?

I was able to get into Service Mode using the following:

1. Turn key to accessory position.
2. Then press MENU.
3. Go to the SETTINGS mode (8-10 seconds).

From this Sevice Mode screen there is no Audio settings. The one I was looking to change is the GAL. I see the following choices:

Onboard Computer
NAVIGATION/GRAPHIC ELEMENT
Video Module
GPS
Sensor Check
Telematic Settings

I have been in each one and do not see the setting choice for the radio settings. Any Ideas?

Try this!!!

1.) Turn the vehicle on.
2.) Turn the radio off.
3.) Turn the radio on and immediately press and hold the select button.
4.) Press the < > keys to move through the different fields.
5.) Use the 1 thru 6 buttons ( depending on which menu - usually only 1 and 2 are used ) to select higher or lower settings.
This is how I've been doing it and it's worked every time.

Tried All Suggestions - No Menu

The only thing I see happen when I the press the SELECT button (10 sec) I breifly see on-screen 'PRES ON'. After it disappears and press SELECT again (10 sec) I breifly see on-screen 'PRES OFF'. Does anyone know what that means? Still cannot get into Radio Service Mode. :tsk:

Found the meaning of Pres On/Pres Off, No Radio Service Mode

Put your screen into radio mode and then press and hold down the "SELECT" button. You should see a message "PRES OFF" appear. This will have now toggled your steering wheel buttons to go to the next strongest station instead of your next pre-set. To go back to the way it is now, repeat the procedure and you'll see the display read "PRES ON".
Also, if you are in the mode where the buttons are set to go to your next preset, if you hold down the up/down steering wheel buttons for longer then a second then it will scan to the next station rather then going to your next preset.

Also, in addition to UcrewX5 suggestion re: scanning for radio station, you can switch to FM AUTOSTORE mode....hit FM button on your radio/NAV from FM 1-->FM 2-->FMA.....Once you are in FMA (Autostore)....hold the FM button for 2-3 seconds and you'll see the radio search for the 6 strongest station in the current area....Then you'll have 6 preset stations you can rotate through.....If you don't like your current selection or need to find another set....just hold the FM button again and find more stations.

Hello!

It did work by me with the INFO-button.
One question: What does GAL mean?

Thanx,
Gordon

GAL: Speed-sensitive volume control. Can be adjusted from level 1-6 using the 6 preset audio buttons. Vehicles equipped with DSP do not use this feature.

Quick Q: Are these steps specific to Navigation screens, or general to Xs without Nav too? Curious to see what settings can be tweaked (an instant audio boost would be nice, but not expecteed ;) ), but I'm in a non-Navi. Possible?
