What do I need for NAV TV retrofit?
I want to start with OEM parts and both NAV-TV and TVonNAV seem to be out of business.
I found this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-G...QQcmdZViewItem I know Roveractive is reputable, but his disclaimer that it might not work on US X5's is making me nervous. Also, assuming this kit will work, what else do I need to keep the system operating when the vehicle is moving? |
If you have an X5 with a MkIII or MkIV then it will work, regardless of the year.
To make it work while in-motion you would need something like this module - http://tvonnav.com/bmwmodule.html |

I'd love to buy tvonnav's kit - I tried to do that about a month ago - but they are apparently out of business and I have no idea 1) what parts the kit contained or 2) if any of the OEM parts had been modified by tvonnav. I'm basically trying to recreate their kit on my own, since they're not around to do it anymore. |
Most modules that allow for in-motion are an in-line set-up that go between the MkIV and the OEM video module. It basically filters the i-bus signal that tells the video module that you are going more than 5 MPH.
The only real difference in the kit you see on eBay and TVonNav's is 1) the eBay kit appears to include the OEM TV antennas whereas TVonNav had an aftermarket antenna, and 2) the eBay kit does not include the in-line module to allow it to work while in-motion. You'll have to check around to see if you can find one of these in-motion modules. |
Thanks for clearing the fog - once again

Ain't nuthin' that $ won't fix, I suppose (sigh!). Thanks again! Now I just have to find that HUGE pile of cash. It must be around here somewhere..... |
Actually this kit is a bit different from the tvonnav kit.
This is the official OEM retrofit kit. The retrofit kit comes with the official TV bumper antenna, and the OEM wiring harness. I purchased one from Germany for my M3. Very nice. I actually have a spare video in motion adapter, made by Dietz if you are interested. PM me .... Its very easy to connect. It just goes in-line between the retrofit TV tuner wiring cable, and the TV tuner itself. Takes about 1 minute to install. You can enable/disable the TV in motion capability by simply holding the clock button on the NAV display for a period of time. Hope this helps ! Cheers, Adrian |
Hi Everyone,
I am a new owner of an 2003 X5 4.4i. Can someone kind of clue me in as to what kind of equipment I have? I have the Navigation with on-board computer. However, I do not have CD Changer. I was searching for different solutions to either install CD/MP3 Changer or install TV / DVD option that would play music. I also would like to install 5th Gen iPod since my wife will be driving the car half the time. Thank you in advance for all your help. Okay I figured out I have MKIV Nav and will figure out what version software I have tonight when I get home. |
Not sure if this 16x9 compatible
Saw this kit on the net and seems to be complete for $1100. Just not sure if it is 16x9 compatible. Here is the link:

I see your number is area code 714 which means you are in Orange County. I work in Costa Mesa and if you don't mind I would like to take a look at your product. If I purchase your product do I still need to purchase TV Tuner? Can I watch video while driving? or do I have to purchase one of those bypass module. Do I have to purchase your DVD player or will any mobile DVD player work? I am asking because one of my friend have a DVD player he no longer uses. Thanks.

You can use any DVD player as a video source, a long as you have R/L Audio and seperare Video outputs on the back of the device. Most DVD players on the market today have this. You can essentially watch TV while driving, but we never recommend this for safety reasons. There is a safety wire on the device that needs to be installed to the emergency brake to provide a ground so that the VSM is notified the vehicle is not moving. The DVD Player we offer features a built-in TV Tuner. To be perfectly honest, I don't think anyone actually uses the TV tuner portion at all - it's all about prerecorded media nowadays. |
Received the VSM module today. Everything looks great, however, does anyone have a wiring diagram for the amp? I need to find some 12V leads. I saw some 12V lead information posted on some other threads but I will need more then one. Have someone done a VSM install? Where did you find your power for your DVD player? How about ground and remote? Thanks.

12V switched lead - purple wire with white stripe Ground - chassis ground Check all connections with a light tester or multimeter before proceeding. DVD power will need both constant and switched leads - they can come off the amplifier or the fuse panel on the opposite side of the cargo area. |
