Nav OS randomly reboots...can anyone help?
I have a MK4 nav system running v26 OS and 2006-2 map DVD. Almost every time I turn on the ignition, the system reboots itself at least once before it settles down to display the map or whatever was there before. It will also do it mid-journey which is really annoying as I have to re-input my destination!
The screen will go blank and then a few seconds later will come up with the message "Please wait a moment...". Does anyone know why it's doing this and if it can be fixed? Thanks. |
First thing I would try is updating to V27.1. If that doesn't help then it may be the map DVD or the drive itself.

Is it a 'copy' of the DVD perchance?
If so, it could have been created 'badly' - seems the MkIV is fussy about disks and how the DVD is written. You need best quality DVD's (I use Verbatim DVD-R OK) and the disk needs to be written at the slowest speed the drive will run at. If you have bought the disk off fleabay etc, then its likely the vendor just bangs 'em out as cheaply as possible. If the disk is an original, then sorry for the post, but I have never had an OEM DVD map disk cause a reboot, only copies. |
I had exactly the same problem and I too thought it was "backup" dvd's to blame but no matter what make model or speed of copy the fault still remained :tsk: - That is until I upgraded to V27.1 a month ago and the system hasn't rebooted once  Very stable very happy! Do the software upgrade as soon as possible and you will almost certainly find no need to change your map DVD.

When you are NOT in guidance mode but in split screen, does the nav now show village names correctly? This worked in all versions up to V26 but V27 caused this to show only the nearest major town. As an example, I live near Bristol - a small town outside Bristol is called Portishead. In V26, the display would show B.PORTISHEAD (ie Bristol.Portishead) - in V27 in just showed Bristol. Not too handy. This was reported by a chap in Aus who said V27 had lost him his suburbs (similar I suppose). Has V27.1 brought this back? No one has yet been able to answer and I'm not going to put V27.1 on until I know it works OK. Cheers. Mark. |
The DVD is an original from BMW but I might get them to swap it just in case.
I haven't had a chance yet to upgrade the OS and I must say I'm slightly nervous as I just got the car and haven't done that sort of thing before. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but is V27.1 an official release yet and would I void my warranty if I upgrade? In fact since I still have the BMW used car warranty will they upgrade it for me? I'm beginning to get the feeling the comms pack in my car is a bit suspect as the radio unit has already failed. I got that replaced though and I'm happy to say I ended up with the Dynamic Routing option as a result!! I was hoping there would be an easy fix - maybe the OS is the best option. Otherwise, I guess I'll have to go back to BMW and try to explain to them what the problem is based on what you're all saying. So far they've not been much help. Thanks for the advice. |
Yes, v27.1 is a official release. However, in your case, I would go back into BMW and explain whats happening. My guess is that they would either upgrade the OS to v27.1 or switch out the NAV computer with a new unit.

Yes Mark you are spot on about the suburbs! V27.1 has not fixed or changed this feature:rolleyes: It's sort of annoying but nothing compared to my Nav constantly rebooting on my modified V26. A necessary upgrade as far as I'm concerned - Oh for V28:)

Interested that you say you have got Dynamic Routing - I was told I'd get exactly the same radio unit as was swapped out (again Dick 'Turpin' Lovetts) - but I do wonder if they can only get the latest versions... Good luck with getting it sorted. Quote:
Cheers now. Mark. |
Mark,
On the Dynamic Routing subject, I understood from looking around the forums that as of the end of 2005 I think all BM54 units had the feature added just as a sort of internal upgrade - same part number but updated internals. Therefore unless they have old stock lying around (unlikely if it's on order) the unit will be exactly the same 'unit' but it should have the DR option built in. I hope you do get it, it's very useful and much better than manually selecting a new route as per the old version - it just tells you it's recalculating and gets on with it! Whilst I stress the unit went wrong all on its own I must confess I was hoping I'd get the DR option when I took the car in!! First thing I did when I got the car back was check, and to my delight there it was...!! :) I've taken a video on my phone of the system rebooting so reckon I'll take that into BMW and see if they can figure something out. Maybe they'll end up replacing the whole lot! It's certainly useful to know others have solved the problem with an OS upgrade though. One final question - does anyone know when v28 is due out? Should I wait till then and just get the one upgrade done? Cheers. Mike |
