Dynamic Routing setting? New BM54 Tuner
Hi all,
Been to the dealer today to get some serious issues with my nav setup sorted out - primarily the radio often wouldn't start up. They are also changing out my Mk4 Navi as it crashes frequently, particularly when the weather here is hot  Anyhow, the new BM54 tuner has added 'Dynamic Routing' into my Nav route preferences menu - thats all fine and dandy, and I have heard its quite smart, however I have no idea how this actually works. I am assuming (and from what I have read) that whereas the old system would read the TMC data and if there was a road closure, accident, holdup etc, it would pop up an advisory on the nav screen and give the option to divert, with dynamic routing it's all done automatically. Is this correct? If so, do you get any kind of message to say you are being diverted round a problem? As a secondary Q, if I have the latest BM54 tuner, is this supposed to have AUX-in and the ability to read MP3's? How do I activate the AUX-In option (apart from plugging in a lead)? Thanks. Mark. |

Correct. When a delay is detected you will hear the message " xxxx , the route is being recalculated" where xxx is the reason for the delay. Sometimes this can get very annoying if there are several hold-ups on two routes that have a similar journey time - but you can turn it off in the usual way. Occasionally you also get a message which is something like "There are hold-ups on the best route, expect delays" that's not the exact wording, but it happens if there is no route without a delay on. To play MP3's you will need a new (Sept 2005 or later) BMW CD Changer, the built in CD slot will not play MP3's on a Nav head unit. If you have one of these then you will get a new option under 'info', "AudioText". If you check this then you will get ID3 tags displayed on the Nav screen. You need to get a cable to activate AUX-In, its quite easy to install yourself but it's not just a simple cable. There is a schematic for it somewhere (can't remember where) but basically it has a 300 K Ohm resistor between right and left channels. The radio uses the resistance value to determine if it should give the Aux option when cycling through the various sources. |
Cheers Richard. That's the kind of info I was looking for.
OK on the CD changer - need to check as it was changed out at some point - not sure if its worth buying a new version and flogging the old one on fleabay. Re. the Aux-in cable, is this just a 'plug in to a vacant socket' type (ie an additional socket on the newer BM54) or does it need hard-wiring into the existing loom? Once they have swapped out my Mk4 for a new one ( all I need now is to get them to change the BT ULF for the very latest  ) then I will have a looksee at adding the Aux-in and perhaps swapping the CD changer over. Cheers, Mark. |
i've also got a bm54 but it doesn't have dynamic routing only the manual diversion input, does it need a firmware update???
but i do have a aux connector behind the nav screen, do you know the aux cable kit part no??? thanks. |

I was 'lucky' I suppose as my BM54 went wonky whilst in warranty, so it was replaced with the new version. Where is your Aux connector? I thought it was a 'boot mounted option', ie. adjacent to where the radio was fitted, but COULD be extended through to the cabin. Mark. |
When BMW introduced the AUX input feature (from 2002 on select vehicles) they did it in a rather odd fashion. They added the feature to the BM radio. Added extra wiring that runs from the BM radio and terminates to a connector behind the NAV screen ... but then to actually get the feature, you have to get your dealer (or yourself) to install an additional cable that connects from the behind the screen connector to where you want to mount the aux audio jack ... say your glovebox.
That said, if your vehicle doesn't have the above cable run you can still purchase cable #82110149390 (USA part #, UK part # might be different) and connect to Pins 3, 4 and 10 on the black 12 pin BM54 radio connector. You could leave your mp3 player in the trunk or just get a regular audio cable extension to run into the cabin. Ah, OK. So this cable that connects to the Nav screen head unit with an input jack on then enables the Aux setting in the radio? If I press MODE and scroll through, all I get ATM is Radio, Changer and CD, no Aux... The Nav was a dealer retrofit done in 2004 so I assume that it has the additional cable run... will see if I can get the cable for the pod.... |
No ... it only terminates to a connector (X14118); doesn't actually connect to the headunit. The fact you have a 2004 would probably mean your car is "AUX input enabled" ie has the cable run ... all you need is the additional cable that connects from the connector (X14118) to the glovebox.
You will still need the cable I mentioned earlier. Once connected you will see AUX option. Take a look at this http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/BM...stallation.pdf I think it will help. Page 10 for the x5. |
Ah, excellent. Yep, explains a lot.
I looked for the install instructions and couldn't see them :tsk: Judging from the cct diag the retrofit cable has the resistor across the +v's which is what activates the menu option for Aux. Gonna see what the stealer wants to charge me for the kit... Thanks again for the info. Mark. |
