Navigation Issues
So one of my good friends is a service tech for BMW so I had him burn me a copy of the latest DVD release and yesterday while driving the error sign came on saying there was a DVD Error etc, so I took out the disc and it was extremely hot, has this ever happened to anyone I have not put it back in as of yet because I don't want it to get stuck?

The Mk IV is very sensitive to copied DVD's. It may be that the copy you have is marginal and is causing the drive head to move back and forth more often than it would with an original DVD due to read errors.
If you have a DVD burner then you could try making another copy of the copy, burning on a high quality DVD-R or +R, some DVD writers require a slow burn speed, others only work at high speed its a case of trial and error. The other possibility is that the fan on your computer has failed, or just that the unit has got very hot in this weather. |
My Mk4 is due to be swapped out next week due to a similar problem. I had real issues when the weather was warm/hot in that the Mk4 would not recognise the DVD & would actually keep rebooting. Taking the DVD out it was roasting hot, and I also wondered if the fan was U/S - I mean the boot area wasn't that warm. Mine is very unreliable now in reading a copy DVD...
Dealer did some diagnostics and agreed to swap out the unit. So, all in all, I'm quite pleased as I have just had a new Climate module AND a new (& upgraded) BM54 tuner. :D |
Thats great, yeah I went out to the car today and put old navi disc and its back working so who knows, i'll swap out l8r and give an update, thanks for the input! BTW: I REALLY wish BMW did topographical information like our RR, its so cool but I already hate the touch screen because of finger oils!

A copy of a disc with errors will produce a disc with exactly the same errors. You need the master. |

Most DVD's that the Mk IV won't read can be read perfectly in a PC DVD drive. So you copy the DVD to an ISO image on the hard drive and then re-burn it on a good quality DVD at slow speed (or whatever works for the drive/DVD combination). |
Update: I put the DVD back in and it works fine, I believe it just got too hot, thanks all for the input!
