Garmin Nuvi 360
 

For those of you who do not have Nav ( and those who travel a lot) I just received the Nuvi 360 personal travel assistant from garmin and after 20 minutes...IT ROCKS.

It's on my wish list. How accurate is the Canadian map information (so far)? Where did you buy it?

So far very impressed with Canadian map info, I am taking a road trip to Winterpeg on Thursday and it will undergo extensive testing. WIll keep you updated. I bought it on line, but I know that gpscentral.ca in Inglewood is getting a few in.

I could of used it a few weeks ago on our Seattle trip. Google map's directions missed a crucial turn that cost me about 45 minutes of back tracking. Did you buy online from the US or Canada?

I'm glad you like it. I got the 350 a few months ago and like it very much. I might even say that it's better than the new Professional Navigation (iDrive) in my E90 330.

Incidentally, I used it a little in Vancouver and it worked very well. I know my way around the town so I didn't need it much so my testing was a bit limited.

Let me know if you can use it inside the car without mounting it.

FWIW, I had it working from inside my brother's house while seated beside a window. We weren't making an effort to point it skyward either. (We were seated the kitchen table.) It does have to have some access to the sky. I'll test it out for you and see how it works. It would be nice to be able to mount it on the ashtray lid or the cover for the Business CD.

It works without a mount. In fact, it works inside a suit coat or a back pack, so long as the antenna is extended. It's a pretty handy little device.

I read somewhere that you can use it walking down the street. Another question is can you use it while camping. You know off road in case you got lost??

The Nuvi is specifically geared to automotive use. It's pretty useless when away from public or unmapped roadways. A couple of weeks back I was up in the Hollywood Hills on an unmarked/unmapped private access road. The Nuvi got thoroughly confused and kept trying to recalculating the route.

It is, however, very usable for walking tours in urban areas. But for camping and hiking, you'll need a handheld GPS device that uses measures lat/lon positioning. Some of the newer handhelds can do both turn by turn roadway and trail lat/lon navigation. I split the cost of Garmin eTrex with a couple of fishing buddies - when we go fishing in Mammoth, it's allowed us to walk in alot further from our trucks and stay out alot longer. We don't have to worry about losing sight of visual landmarks because of sunset. You should be able to rent one from a place that rents camping gear like Sports Chalet.
