Nav System Overheating?

I have a Mark III Nav System in my 2002 330xi. I know it's not an X5, but you guys have an awesome Nav forum! I'm running software 3-1/63, which is the latest code the Mark III will accept. I just got my car a few months ago and the Nav system has been running fine until this past week.

Lately, there have been several days where the temperature outside has climbed into the 90s. I've noticed the Nav computer will spontaneously shut itself down while I am driving. Sometimes it automatically ejects the Nav CD when this happens and sometimes it doesn't. It won't allow me to restart it if I turn the car on/off. If I reinsert the Nav CD, it doesn't see it. However, when I come back in the morning, all is well!

Does anyone have any insight on this issue? Do I just have a dead cooling fan, or is my Nav computer dying? My warranty expires in August 2006, so I'd like to get my car into the dealer if possible. Also, along that line, does anyone thing I'd be able to get them to upgrade me to a Mark IV? ;)

Thanks!

Well, my Mkiv navicomp was changed under warranty for the same issue - believed to be a dead cooling fan. If you have warranty then you have absolutely nothing to loose in taking it in and complaining that its faulty.

TBH, I had no issue - they just ran a few diagnostics (apparently) and then agreed to swap it out - though they did order a Mk3 in by mistake 1st go.

See if you can talk them into ordering in a Mk4 DVD unit, but I very much doubt they will entertain the idea. Of course you could just get them to fix it under warranty and then in August buy a Mk4 off ebay (get the RIGHT Mk4 tho) and sell your Mk3 on.

That sounds good. I'll call my service adviser tomorrow and see what I can work out. ...Crossing fingers on the prospect of a MK4 upgrade!

I took my car in last week. They replaced my Nav computer with a new Mark III. No upgrade to a Mark IV. :-( They also re-coded my computer to work with the new nav computer. I have a few new options with the software update and the new hardware seems to have addressed the overheating problem.
