MKIV euro-mode/US-mode question

Nav experts:
I have installed a MKIV which is from Europe. It is currently showing version 4-71. I was able to change over to English language with the "GB" setting. I am using a 2007.1 US DVD and everything nav-related works perfectly. Perspective mode is gorgeous and the nav is much faster as expected.

Question:
Some of the warnings and verbiage on the MID and nav still have European terms, i.e., leaving the trunklid open shows "Bootlid" instead of "trunklid" (which is kinda cool).

From some posts I have gathered that I need to install V.28 version to change these terms back to standard US mode. What else?
Thx -

You need to get your car and navigation coded by a dealer to be in US English. You can hack some of the nav files to get part way there, but coding is the best way. They should only charge 1 hour of labor, and it is money well spent.

Thanks Brian. I know that my service adviser, who is really cool, will give me that 'look' when I tell him this. You know the look, the one that says, "I have no clue what you are talking about". They are a great dealership but I have had to educate them on several things that they should already know.

In case this one is brand new to them, is there a link, PDF, or write-up of what needs to be done that I can show them?

Thx

This is one of the few times when the answer to a coding question is "yes." The nav coding instructions are at the bottom of the OS upgrade TSB. The language coding instructions are part of the car's central key coding process. See all the links.

Thanks for the info. I never read down far enough on the V28.pdf. My mistake. My stealer will not commit to 1 hour of labor, stating that problems could occur taking much longer, etc. Problems are a possibility of course, but at $120/hour I don't know if I want them to taking 2,3,4+ hours to complete the recoding process. I think I will leave it alone for a few weeks and see what symptoms I notice with it not recoded. If I can live with it, I'll save some cash. Right now everything is working perfectly.
Thanks again.

Find another dealer or independent mechanic who knows what they are doing. That is a very simple operation on the MODIC/GT-1/Progman system.

Yep, I'll ask around at some other shops. Thanks for the help.

Nag screen

Brian, won't this bring back the nag screen and put him back to feet instead of yards?

Yes, when you get a nav coded, it brings it back to full regional specifications. So, for a US-spec car...
  • You will get the accept screen
  • Short distances will be in feet
  • The Emergency function will show up on the main menu
  • The Route Magnet feature will go away
  • The vehicle ID (VIN, model) etc. will be stored in the nav
  • The language selections will include US English
However, you can always do the downgrade/upgrade trick to kick the nav computer back into Euro-mode to reverse the first five changes. (Euro-mode is really a misnomer, becuase the computer really does not revert back to a full Euro state. The nav computer remembers its regional coding and language settings.)

  • You will get the accept screen <-- don't want it
  • Short distances will be in feet <-- don't care
  • The Emergency function will show up on the main menu <-- don't need it
  • The Route Magnet feature will go away <-- don't care
  • The vehicle ID (VIN, model) etc. will be stored in the nav <-- is this critical to the cluster or some other components?
  • The language selections will include US English <-- would be nice but GB is working ok for me.

I am searching now to see how critical it is to have the proper VIN in the nav.

If anyone is up for another nav question: What all would be changed if I loaded the hacked KrisL V28 on this euro mode MKIV?
