Excellent :thumbup:

Thank you KiwiJochen, its all much clearer now. One or two more things and then I'll leave you in peace ;)

Apologies, this was a typo, I meant the white plug !

This is existing and does not need to be changed.

By this I mean that the earth strap from the new harness will join the existing one. Am I better of leaving it off?

Understood

Are you saying that there are some cables going to the existing X1313 blue connector on the navigation computer that need to remain in place? Therefore its not a case of simply removing the exsisting harness plug and replacing it with the new one?

Are you saying to remove the X1313 connector from the new harness and wire it to the relevant pins (7,16,5,14,6,15,12,1,3) on the existing harness connector, thus leaving the original conector and some of the original wiring in place?

This confuses me slightly ! Connector X18801 is the blue plug that is currently connected to my old mono headunit. This plug will connect to the blue socket on the new widescreen display.

What you are saying suggests that I need to re-wire this connector. Is it not plug and play?Perhaps you could explain what you mean. I have no drawing of my old navigation so I have no idea how any of the existing cables are wired. I'm working under the assumption that my existing harness has the blue plug (X18801) wired to the Radio module in the same way the new widescreen necessitates.

This is simply a cable going from pin 12 on X18801 to pin 12 on X18802 right ?

If you look at the cabling you need, no eart wire is required.

X1313 currently has these signals:
Ibus pin 3
Terminal30 (battery) pin 1
NAV_NF+ (voice) pin 9
NAV_NF- (voice gnd) pin 18
Terminal31 (gnd) pin 10
Terminal31 (gnd) pin 11

You need to retain all of these signals and add
VMLC31 (monitor gnd) pin 12
RGB signals

So leave the existing wiring attached, and just fit the 3 x video signals and the monitor ground

Leave ALL existing wiring in place.
The mono-nav is a subset of the colour nav. You NEED all the existing wiring. You only need to ADD the RGB signals (and respective wires).

I cannot confirm the wiring of the connector on the radio-nav unit, it is missing in the WDS. So you will need to document the plug (wire colours, pin numbers) and then compare to the retro-fit diagram. You may find everything is correct, and in the right place.

Yes, the LCD brightness control (PL, black wire) is a single wire from the blue plug to the white plug of the bordmonitor. As per the retrofit instructions.

What you are doing is simple. You are tending to over-complicate matters.

Remember: what you have is a subset of what you need. No existing wiring needs to be removed. You only need to ADD wiring.

Thanks Jochen,

I am just trying to be sure I understand rather than finding out later that I've mis-understood something you've said.

Forgive me if this leads to confusion and what may seem as over complication.

I make it that pins 5,6,7 carry the video signal so it will be a case of adding these and also pin 12?

Thanks so much for all your help and re-assurance. You've been an invaluable help to me since I started investigating this last Friday.

Some people have the right intention, but boy do they get it wrong when it comes to giving advice!

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again

M

Video:

X1313 blue connector on nav computer
VMR = pin 7, shield = pin 16
VMG = pin 5, shield = pin 14
VMB = pin 6, shield = pin 15

Excellent :thumbup:

I know what I'm doing now from start to finish !! Off to the dealer to see what cable I can get.

Thanks Jochen :bmw: U d man

When I was looking for my bimmer, I found one which had the same NAV you have.

I did my research and I come up with the following results.

There are two versions of the MK2. The early one has the same plugs and wiring as the MK1. This is a problem as you need to buy a convertor for the plus. Later MK2s have the same wiring as the mk3 and mk4.

The 16:9 has different plug on the back so I found a complete wiring kit for MK4/16:9 on german ebay for 150 euros shipped. Do a search and you will find a lot of sellers selling them.

The cheapest 16:9 display I found on ebay come from a guy in Lithuania.

The MK4 I found in Germany.

Also make sure you have the BM54 tuner as well.

Lucky for me, it has the newer plugs but yes, no big deal to get the convertor.

My local parts guy has given me one for 180 Euro so rather than going through eBay, I took it from him. He ordered it as a stock item, which takes a day longer, but means we have more chance of returning it should it not be what I want.

I went through www.bimmernav.com for both.
