Upgrading from MKIII to MKIV Nav System
Hi Folks. I have been searching the forums but can't find a reference to upgrading my nav system from MkIII to the MKIV. Forgive me if i've missed it!
Am I right in thinking its just a matter of changing from the CD unit to the DVD reader, or is it something more sinister?! Any advice would be great. I'm driving a 08 / 2003 X5 Many thanks in advance. Matt |
Matt- you unplug the old and plug in the new. You'll need the DVD map to use the MkIV. It's that easy.
:xoutpost: |
like jv says its that easy, but don't forget to eject the cd from the mk3 and then wait till the red led goes out *before* you unplug the mk3 (as this may leave the mk3 in a "funny" state, bad news if you are going to sell it on)
then enjoy the features of the mk4 :) |
You can even still use your Mk-III map CD in the Mk-IV, if you want. Obviously you will not be taking advantage of the extended information in the DVD, but you will certainly be using the fastest speed and logics the Mk-IV provides. You may even hear people saying CDs carry better information, for some areas, than the equivalent DVD (besides POI info, of course).

Easy swap! I upgraded mine a few months ago. Also my unit is in european mode so I have no accept screen (you can find out how to do this on the main page - Navigation #2)

Urgent!
i´ve just tried to change MK3 to MK4, my car has DSP and TV (MK3), when i installed this MK3 to my friends car who doesn´t have DSP or TV these menus where still there, do i have to code it or what?
|
Don't worry,
The mk3 will try to re-establish connections the the DSP and TV (because it (the mk3) thinks that there has been a power cut, and not car swap), so just wait, the mk3 will work out that it can no longer "see" the TV and DSP and blank them out, this may take upto 15 minutes. |
ok they go grey and i can´t use them. do they go away or stay like that? and if i put this MK4 in my car does it see that i have tv and dsp?
|
Yes, they will go grey then disappear.
The mk4 will work the same (in reverse), when you plug it in, it will not find the TV and DSP until it does a full system probe, this could take up to 15 minutes, but they should be found, and be selectable in a short time. |
thanks, you are right. love the MK4, map is smooth and it responds faster:thumbup:

Dan, that guide is for doing a mk2 to a mk4, mk3 to mk4 is way eaiser than that.
Remove trim, Insert radio removal tools (or 2 small screw drivers) Remove drive (slowly) Unplug the 2 coloured connectors then, unplug the push on GPS antenna Swap mk3 for mk4 Reconnect coloured plugs and push on GPS antenna Push (slowly) the mk4 back into slot Replace trim. I did mine in less than 15 minutes. I did not disconnect the battery but followed the mk3 shutdown procedure, and had no problems. |
