Big thanks to all re: navigation issues
I'm new to this group and would like to thank everybody who has posted information regarding upgrading their navigation system. I recently bought a 2002 X5 3.0D and after reading pretty much every post on the subject, successfully upgraded my MKIII to V29.1 and also 'aquired' (isn't the internet a wonderful playground) the latest maps for my area (currently Benelux), burnt them to disc and they work as well.
Unfortunately, in spite of the above, my nav systems GPS does not currently provide a position which I suspect to be an antenna issue and have ordered a replacement. If I access the GPS tracking status in the hidden menu it shows that it is receiving PRN info from 8 satellites but 0.0 for S/N Ratio. If anybody has any ideas apart from trying a new antenna I'd appreciate the imput. So, thanks again everybody - next stop a MKIV and Bluetooth!! |
What does the antenna status show?
ANT OPEN = broken cable, cable unplugged, or faulty antenna REC ERROR = receive error, no signal being received, can be a faulty antenna, or something metallic (like window tint, or parking in your garage) blocking the signal |
Staus shows RECERR. No new window tint and it does the same no matter where the car is, so I guess that means the antenna is bad. I have a replacement on its way and will let you know if that solves the problem. I appreciate the interest.

My new antenna never arrived (crap eBay seller) so I took all the neccessary panelling off the car to trace the antenna cable. After fiddling with all the connections the GPS started working, so still not really sure where the problem was but it has been fine for the last 5 days.
After I got the GPS working, I replaced my MKIII with a MKIV Nav  and now have a new question...... What is the display supposed to look like? My screen is kinda dull with the sky a sort of beige colour. Is this normal? |
No, but it could have a custom sky setup on the mk4, I'd be tempted to downgrade to v.28 then back up v.29 (with your own mods if you want).
|
I've just downloaded v28, so will burn that and try to downgrade/upgrade again to v29 to see if the colours improve. Should the sky be blue in perspective view with an original v28 or v29 installed?
I also noticed that when I added speed cameras to my 2007-1 Nav disc, the yellow icon I used appears greenish blue on the screen. |
Yes, the sky should be blue, but from the of it the monitor could be duff.
|
Ah, great
I was afraid that might be the problem as it looked about the same when I had the MKIII connected to it except I obviously couldn't see the sky. Is the only option to replace the monitor or can it be repaired? |
Check the screen when the TV is on. Does the TV display in all the correct colours?
If not, then suspect the screen, or a wiring fault. the screen is driven with red, green and blue. Watch the TV / nav to see if a red or green or blue is missing. If one is missing it may be a wiring issue - check the connections on the video module and the monitor, make sure all video signals look nice and clean (physically) |
My car does not have the TV option but I will check the connections on the back of the monitor. Is there another unit somewhere in the car that produces the picture from the navigation computer or does the picture come directly from the computer to the monitor?
I'm hoping you're onto something here as it seems that the monitor may not be getting the blue input. The small box in the top left corner that shows direction of travel has a pinkish background and I have noticed from screen shots on the internet that it should be a blue background. And obviously my beige sky is missing some blue.... |
