MKIV Disc reading problem

Hi there,
Wondering if any of you can help me with this problem:

I have a late 03 X5 with a MK!V Nav. The vehicle was supplied without a map disc (I wonder why?). I have since acquired a map DVD copy and found it not to be working, however I also decided to upgrade the software from CD which worked fine.
While I was at a BMW dealer I borrowed an official map DVD and that too could not be read. I then borrowed a range rover map CD and that worked fine.
I have read somewhere on here that the unit uses two lasers, if that is so then it seems like the DVD laser is goosed.

So my questions are,
Is it possible to repair the DVD laser so I can have it fully functional?
(A new unit is apparently £1200)
If not can I obtain up to date map CD's of the UK, France and Spain and simply suffer the torment of going to the boot every time I leave a Country? I ask as I can't seem to find CD's only DVD's.

Or is there something else I've not thought of that will rectify my situation?

And yes it's definately a MKIV.

Yours in exasperated gasps of anticipation.

Splatt.

Best option would be to buy a replacement Mk4 on ebay (circa £400), fit it and then either bin the old one or offer it on ebay as faulty - you will probably still get about £100 for it.

No idea where BMW get their prices from - I mean, £1200!!

BMW offer a replacement DVD drive as a spare part.

Ask for part number 65830413509

I don't know what the price is.

I would be interested in the unit in its current working state if you want to sell it

Interesting. Never seen that one before.

ETK lists it at £368 + VAT (17.5% tax) - probably cheaper to buy an ebay Mk4 & sell the old unit to Jochen for £200 :nanana:

Cheers guys,
£368 for a DVD player that probably has the same optics as those ones you get in asda for £14.97.
I'm thinking I'll probably keep it and just run CD maps. In my research I've found that the VDO dayton ones are supposed to work, so i'll be looking for those. Anyone got experience in that area?

Ta.
