MK4 Nav incompatibility issue..

I am very sorry if this has been covered, but I read through 14 pgs in the nav section and found nothing..

I have a 2000 e46 and just updated the OEM nav.. have installed the 16:9 display unit with built in CD player and a MK4 nav brain. The Nav, CD Changer in the trunk, and the AM/FM tuner all work perfect, but the in dash cd player comes up as "tape" and if you press eject the face opens and closes repeatedly forever until you turn off the key. if you manage to get a cd in there it just spits it right back out..

Is there a way to fix this, or did I get the wrong unit?

Thanks!!

I have never seen this before either. It sounds like you could have a fault in the 16:9 unit with the CD player. It could also be the radio module-- maybe an incompatibility there?

Did you originally have navigation in the car, or did you do a virgin retrofit?
I have not researched E46 component compatibilities, but does the radio module need to be a certain version to work with the CD player?

It originally had a 4:3 indash with a cd player and the original nav unit.. The equipment I purchased was suppoedly tested while attached together and worked fine with no issues..
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was some type of service mode or programming menu in the radio to change such things.

You might try disconnecting the radio module and reconnecting it. Or, disconnect the battery, let the car sit, and then reconnect the battery.

The CD player in the screen should identify itself to the radio when everything powers up. Maybe that identification never occurred, and the radio still thinks that it is communicating with a tape unit. In come cases, the component self-identification (DSP, TV module, Telephone, etc.) cleans itself up within a short time. But, maybe the radio/CD relationship needs more encouragement.

Thanks! I will try that and let you guys know..

well.. unplugging it to reset did nothing.. I just checked that link and it seems like i may need a new radio module.. i will go check which one is in there..

Ok... that post specifies:

"...CD behind Nav screen is only recognised if you have the BM54 New Generation radio fitted, if you have the BM24 fitted then you get the message "no tape" even though you have a cd fitted..."

I am assuming that means I have a BM24.. but I do not know how to tell.
Here is what is on mine:
Model#: C43 BM US
P/NO.: 65. 10-6 902 718
SW/NO: 42
Index: 06

Does that mean anything to any of you?

The post above was from European folks, so the radio names and part numbers are slightly different for US-spec cars.

Anyway, you have the first generation round pin radio. You need the US Equivalent of the "New Generation" radio called the BM53. You will also need a set of adapter cables to connect the BM53's new style plugs to your car's existing wiring. Two other very cool features of the BM53 are that it supports BMW's OE Sirius module (just plug it it), and it also has the Aux input connector.

These are the wiring adapters you will need, along with the BM53. While you are at it, you might as well get the Aux adapter too.
