No Nav Voice
Hi guys,
I have been searching but found nothing! I have just installed my nav computer, i only had tv before. I used the blue plug from the tv. everything looks to work fine, but I have no nav voices? do i need to move any pins? Terry |
Terry, any info on components existing and added would help troubleshoot.

Did you have the dealer code in the nav ?
|
Sorry Guys,
Before I started in the car it had the 16:9 monitor, Cd Changer a BM54 radio and TV module. No Navigation. I have spoke to people before doing this and they said it would be fine. What I did was bought a MK IV nav computer. And seen as I was not really bothered about having TV, I took the blue plug out of the TV and used that in the Nav. Everything works fine apart from there is no nav voice. All the volumes are up and not muted, the radio even goes quiet while it is supposed to be speaking and then turns the voluma back up!?!? |
Did you put 2 plugs into the new nav? Blue and purple?
|
No purple at the moment, but the doesn't have any voice pins or stop the nav working.

Unplug nav and plug in the TV tuner Switch to television Tune into a TV station and check you have sound, if you do all the wiring etc is OK and the problem is inside the nav If there are no more analogue TV stations in your area, get your old video recorder or DVD player or playstation with an RF output. set it up close to the car, stick a bit of wire about 6 inches long in the antenna socket that would normally go to the TV, and the video recorder becomes a mini TV station. You will be able to tune in to it on the car. Make sure the country settings in the TV tuner are correct for your country - for the UK, it is PAL-I If sound is there then you know the problem is not in the car. If no sound, you need to start looking into the cars wiring. For the nav: if in doubt as to what SW is loaded, reload the software with standard, current version BMW software. What version is loaded? I believe you have a Mk4? |
Jochen,
Yeah the sound still comes from my TV tuner perfect. So you don't reckon it is wiring? Does the MKIV use the same audio out pins as the TV tuner? The only other thing I can think of is a corrupt Nav Disc? Can you explore the disc and navigate to where the Nav speech files are and play them through windows? I have V29 of software I think, I will update to 31 later and see what that does? Is there anyway the MKIV I have bought could be broken? As everything else works great with it? Terry |
Strange, I'm having the EXACT same problem on my M3. I had TV tuner and CD changer. Installed the MK4 setup and no voice, when I'm listening to music, it cuts in ever so quietly but nothing actually comes out of the nav.
Any help would be most appreciated! |

After checking the TV sound, did you actually remove the blue plug from the TV tuner and connect it to the nav? That's the best way to check if the problem lies in the nav or in the wiring to the nav Quote:
Possible. Quote:
You can play back all words and phrases on your PC BUT: this doesn't prove if that part of the nav OS disc is scratched or poorly burnt, because PC CD drives are more sensitive that the nav CD drive, and thus will mask a poor nav OS disc. To confirm disc quality, compare the disc contents to the image file - make sure it is identical. And then do a disc scan, surface check, and error check. Quote:
V29 refers to the version of the nav OS CD, not the version of the nav software. A V29 OS CD contains 7 different versions of nav OS for 7 different nav generations. Current Mk4 software is 4-1/100, which can be found on V31 or V32 OS CDs. Look in your Settings screen on the nav, top right hand side of screen. That shows the current loaded version. [QUOTE=terrymcgIs there anyway the MKIV I have bought could be broken? As everything else works great with it?[/QUOTE] Sure, it is possible the audio output stage is faulty. But this is very rare. |
I have spoke to M3OZ and I am going to take him through it later how to fix this. The problem lies with the BM54 quadlock connector. It has different audio inputs for the tv and nav voice. So he needs to remove the two audio pins from the tv slot and put them into the nav slot. Of course to get the tv back up and running he will need a tv retrofit loom.

Check wiring of the audio output of the nav: Nav blue plug: Pin 9 = voice signal, blue/red wire, goes to pin 3 of the TV tuner (video module) white plug Pin 18 = voice ground, blue/brown wire, goes to pin 12 of the TV tuner white plug Check in particular that: a) the wires are not reversed b) that the voice signal is not shorted to ground (measure with ohmmeter on high ohms range) For NEW GEN RADIOS which have different TV and Nav Voice inputs: Check wiring of the audio output of the nav: Nav blue plug: Pin 9 = voice signal, blue/red wire, goes to pin 5 of the small connector on the radio tuner (radio module) main plug Pin 18 = voice ground, blue/brown wire, goes to pin 11 of the small connector on the radio tuner (radio module) main plug |
The problem is not on the blue plug, it is within the quadlock connector into the BM54 radio module.
|
Terrymcg is correct
The problem is in the radio quad plug I have a spare retrofit loom here for an X5 for nav upgrade with TV already fitted It has the 2 nav connectors (blue and purple) and a radio quadlink connector with the inputs Need to be looking at the radio connection |
Hi
Im having the same problem as Terry, I did a Nav retrofit using the TV loom, all works apart from the Nav Voice. Can you explain in detail (or even photos) what you did to sort this many thanks Jon |
guess this wasn't solved? I'd like the same info as Jonny C, did you fix yours yet?
|
Terry,
If you solve this problem please let me know how. I retrofitted sat nav and didn't want the TV module, so plugged the MK-IV nav unit into the TV plugs. The exact same problem, can hear the radio or cd volume reduce but no audio from the sat nav. Been trying for ages to locate the problem, I'm pretty sure its wiring but can't find the answer !!! rgds Mark |
msymons - it will be a simply wiring issue. Use the wiring diagram and ensure that the nav sound is wired to the nav input of your system
You must have a new-gen radio module, because the old-gen share TV and nav audio on the same input, where as new-gen have a different input for nav sound So simply connect the nav sound from the nav to the nav voice input of the radio The wiring diagram says it all! |
Thanks KiwiJochen,
Presently working away from home but can't wait to get back and get it sorted, will let you know how I get on. The car must be one of the last E46's as its registered june 2006, so would imagine it is the newre radi module. Rgds, mark |
