why is navigation upside down?

X5 2005 Sports.

I have just bought the Car and upgraded the OS to V31 and used a 2008 High 1 Europe DVD.

First, I would like to say thanks for wealth of info on this forum (and others as well).

First time of using the Navigation and its absolutely rubish compare to TomTom and others... but thats beside the point :)

My Navigation seems to be upside down/backwards :) , i.e While I am moving forward the direction arrow is going down!

Can this be changed so it behaves like TomTom (i.e map not upside down and movement forward in direction of travel) or this is the best disorienting features the best Car manufacturer has got to offer ?

cheers

Set the map to direction of travel. You are looking at the map with the "Pointing North" view. Pointing North is a populer setting for many purists, but I prefer direction of travel.

Thanks very much,

I presume this is in a setting somewhere?

cheers

When map is displayed, push right button and select map positioning.

I drove yesterday with my TomTom and was so p****d off by the inability to acquire satellites and the lack of guidance in tunnels.

TomTom might look pretty and have lots of customisable features, but it's navigation abilities are crap compared to the BMW factory system

I guess it depends on what one's first Nav unit is :), First one I ever used was TomTom which I have been using for 4yrs now hence dependent on it and no other Manufacturer .

Maybe the software on your TomTom is not upto date. I do get guidiance via the tunnel(though not Satellite). Well longest turnell I've ever went into is about 1.5miles (Blackwall in London)

At the mo, I just switch off the X5 Nav or leave it on for dash display and then use my TomTom. STill good to have the BMW version though cos it keeps the value of the car up :)

My TomTom is uptodate. .

The tunnels I drive through have partial views of the sky, the nav gets really confused as to where I am; in the tunnel, or on the surface roads above the tunnel. A BMW nav would never get confused.

Your BMW nav system will change dramatically when you go from 3-1/10 to 3-1/63, and become much much much easier to use.

i had the same problem but with me it was my fault.
I mounted the mk4 upside down

Mine has been confused PLENTY of times. Especially when I use to live in a county north of here, 2004.2 finally had my neighborhood on it, but when I was sitting in my driveway or on my street it thought I was a good block or two away. Numerous other confusions, it's a good system, but not perfect...

I have limited experience with my SO's Tom Tom, I haven't heard a complaint from the main user though...
