Compass Pointing the wrong direction.
 

Hello,

I recently bought a 2nd hand E46 330i with the 16:9 Nav (MK4)...

I live in Taiwan, and no map for my region is available.

I currently have a Europe DVD map in the system, and although I don't get to see roads and stuff, it is still useful to have that little compass on the upper-left hand corner.

Unfortunately, It seems that the compass always point to the wrong direction....
I switched to "Travel Direction" mode, and if I'm going South, the compass will be pointing upwards (indicating that my front is North, which is not true, because I'm heading South...)

Okay, Taiwan is located at about 25° N, 120° E.....
When I'm going South, I noticed that the Lat and Long on the Nav screen..
Where, If I'm going South, the minutes and seconds increases... (So, for example, 25°1'20"N becomes 25°1'21"N, then 25°1'22"N...., this is incorrect, if I'm going south, the Lat should decrease, not increase.)

So, what's going on here?

On a related issue... Is there any way to convert map data from say... TomTom or Garmin to the BMW's VDO Dayton format?

I know Garmin and TomTom both have Taiwanese map available.

Hmm..... I was kinda hoping that there would be some sort of Map Database converter available.... Since the maps are all provided by Navteq... just encoded differently for different systems....

Oh well... Still no resolution on the compass thing...

Oh yea, I noticed that I can go into the service screen and find some diagnostic information...

I went in once, but couldn't go in again no matter how long I hold the "Menu" button.... Should I go INTO settings first, then press+hold "Menu", or stay in main screen, choose "Settings" (but don't go in), then press+hold "Menu"??

It seems that I'm the person providing answers to my own question... Oh well..

I went into service mode (you have to go into Settings before pressing the Menu button), and noticed that Almanac is No, and GPS showed interference...

Guess that's the source of the problem.
It has been raining for weeks now here in Taiwan, and perhaps it never got a clear reading from the Satellite.

Or perhaps the GPS antenna requires some attention. I'll go into the trunk electronic area when I get some time off next week.

Problem solved.

The antenna was disconnected for some unknown reason...

Reconnected the antenna, and the GPS is working happily.

Now, next problem:
Where can I find Taiwanese Map for BMW's VDO Dayton system.... Non seems to be available....

Navteq does have Taiwanese Map in their database, but did not release them in the VDO Dayton format....

Start with asking BMW Taiwan.
If BMW Taiwan have no maps, then ask other car makers that use VDO Dayton maps:

VW
Porsche
Opel

If none of those have any maps for Taiwan, then you need to find a very clever software programmer to make you a map. These people are few and far between. I know one in Russia.

Unfortunately, map file formats are proprietary and there are no tools to convert maps from one format to another.
