Nav GPS not working properly...Showing wrong location and direction

First I just wanted to say hi to everyone on this board. I have a MKIV Nav, software version 4-1/70.

My nav is constantly pointing to the wrong location and going the wrong direction (although the car tracking works). This started happening about two months ago, but a month later out of the blue the problem disappeared and all of a sudden my nav was back in working form. But the problems reappeared last week and do not know why it is happening. I have included pictures of my GPS settings in the Service Menu. Could it be that I'm just not getting the proper satellites? Thanks for the help!

Your GPS antenna is bad. On your photos you are only tracking one satellite with a weak signal (4.4). You should be seeing 7 or 8 satellites, with signal strengths of at least 4 satellites of around 10 to 18.

Replace the GPS antenna.

And at the same time update the nav OS software from 4-1/70 to 4-1/100 :-)

Might it be worth checking the antenna connections before replacing the antenna itself?

Always :-)

Thanks for the input. Where do I find the GPS antenna? Or the connections rather?

Edit:

Checking the nav again, my software is 4-1/100. The photo I used for reference must of been old, because I just upgraded the nav to the newest version couple of months ago.

Connection of antenna to antenna cable is on the antenna

Connection of antenna cable to nav unit is on the back of the nav

Location of antenna depends on what type of BMW you have - help us out a little here.....

sorry bout that, its an 06 M3

Antenna is on rear parcel tray under the parcel tray liner.

BMW should fix the problem since I am still under warranty correct? Also, since I updated the nav with a custom splash screen, will this pose any problems? Should I update the nav with the default splash? Thanks again!

Put your nav back to standard OS software to avoid any issues with BMW. Then talk to BMW about warranty repair.

EDIT: Nevermind, got it to work.

I am going to bring my car to the dealer since it is still under warranty, but does anyone have a link to where I can get the standard OS from (w/ original splash)? I tried using the software from the V31 thread, but I am still getting my ///M startup logo instead of the OEM BMW logo. Thanks!

I have a similar problem on my 2001 (Dec) 330i.

I've always known it was something to do with the reception (no icon showing reception) and couldn't nail ti to the antenna or connections. My mechanic refuses to look at it unless there's a problem, and with my luck - on all three occasions when I am taking it in, it corrects itself on the way. (Ok - the third time, the mechanic wasn't in, and when he was back from his holiday, it had fixed itself.)

Anyone know where the GPS antenna is on the 330i, manufactured Dec 2001? And do I basically just unplug and replug?

Thanks.

PS. How do you guys manage to get such detailed information out of your GPS unit? Is that only available on the Mk IV? (I have Mk III).

If you have 4-1/100 loaded (with modified screen), then you cannot reload the same version. Reason is simple: the nav only does an update when the new version is a different version number to whatever is currently loaded.

So go back one version to eg 4-1/91 and then it will load fine.

Detailled info is in the Service Mode, which is also available on the Mk3.

To access Service Mode:

1. Press MENU
2. Select Settings
3. Press and hold MENU and wait - Service Mode will appear.

Does anyone know where the Nav antenna is located on an 03 X5?

Roy in GA 09-11-2008 10:52 PM

Under rear spoiler.

Find a spare and hook it to the back of the nav computer. Kiwi can tell us if you can tell anything by ohming out the cable to the antenna pod.

Hi Roy It sounds like the same problem as mine (James from Scotland) or a loose connection at the nav computer where the aerial connects to it,
P S mines still going strong

not meaning to hijack the topic, but could someone explain how to get to these screens on the navigation? Is it the 'secret' menu under 'sets' where i need to keep the menu button pressed for a bit?

thanks and sorry for the slight off topic.

Edit:

nevermind. I saw the relevant post in the previous page. Sorry!
