This is a great thread. Just an FYI that the new generation of navigation system dvd drives (including E70 X5's, etc) are not immune to failure. Apparently it is "due to hardening of the anti-vibration gel on the read head." See attached SIB 650110.

HI!
In this SIB ist the "ISTA repair instructions "REP 6583580

I received my DVD M3 4.6 Drive and I'm happy to say that everything worked perfectly. Reads backups DVD maps perfectly as well. Now that I installed the new drive I realize the sound my previous drive wasn't making was the DVD Spinning. So either the motor had died first or it died when I was installing my new laser. Now I have a broken DVD drive left over and two new DVD Lasers =\. If anyone is looking for parts PM me.

As for the new drive, I got it from Elektronik-Idee. E-mail Tobias, he was very helpful. ([email protected])

He charged me 139 Euros, shipping included and I got it in just over a week and well packaged. So it took a long time but I finally got my X's navigation capabilities back and I'm extremely happy :). Thanks for all the help.

I was able to buy a complete replacement DVD drive today from Tischer - BMW now has the replacement available for $80

i have the drive sitting on the workbench - i will try to remember to post the part number here. the part number does not show up on realoem

Are you sure you didn't buy a DVD drive for the i-drive computer? The ETK has such a part mistakenly listed for the E53 when it is actually only for the E70.

The part number is 65 8 39 237 706 - I can not find it in RealOEM or BMWfans. Any guidance would be nice before I take apart my MK4 DVD Nav

Can you post some pictures of it? How did you hear about it in the first place? And how did you get around the $500 core price?

That website is invalid. Do they have a working website and how did you hear about them?

$80 for the whole loading mechanism is a bargain mate.
