Need Help with Nav System

4 Attachment(s)
I am not the first owner so I know nothing about the previous history of the car.. it was built March 2001 4.4i. I recently replaced my 4:3 monitor with a 16:9 and it works fine. (plug and play)

I have the DVD drive in the trunk (connected and the led is on), but I do not have the maps DVD.

My problem is, I do not have "GPS Navigation" as an on option on my screen. What is the reason for that? Is it because I have no DVD in the drive? or there is something else missing?

Here are some pics of my system ... your help would be much appreciated

Your TV module is running as the display driver, this means that the Nav computer is either faulty or has crashed.

Not having a map disc in would not cause the nav computer to crash, it will work without a disc in the drive.

At a guess, I'd say your mk3 (nav computer) is dead.

Try and reboot it, follow the procedure

*before* you unplug the mk3

Goto the car open the drivers door,
Then goto the nav computer, press eject on drive,
Eject the map disc,
Wait for the red led on the drive to go out,
now disconnect the 2 plugs on the back then the gps lead, wait 10 seconds then replug in the plugs and gps lead.

Go to the car and turn on the ignition and hope that the nav computer comes back, if not it's dead, replace with a MK4.

Thank you for your help, but the problem is that I do not have a map CD... I received the car without it

I guess I have to find one to make a test

Having a disc in the drive will make no difference.

Reboot the mk3 and see if it starts working, you will know if it does as the menu screen will not look so mickey mouse.

BTW, you have a MK3 nav computer not a MK4 so you can only run a CD in it not a DVD,

So I would directly disconnect the MKIII after opening the driver door? I will skip the CD steps then wait for 10 seconds and connect them again.

Correct?

Open the drivers door, then go to the boot and wait, the red led on the nav computer will flash several times, wait until it goes out, then disconnect the 2 plugs (purple and blue) then the GPS plug (be careful is easy to break), wait 10/20 seconds then reconnect gps, then the 2 plugs (purple and blue), hopefully the computer should spring back into life, if not then it's dead.

Here is what I found:

The red led is always on regardless if the car is locked or unlocked
It never flashes... I locked the car and waited for like 30 seconds and it is still on

What is the case now?

Sounds like the nav computer is faulty, I'd say you will need to replace it.

Essam, Try to put the car in sleep mode for three or four hours (that is to disconnect the battery completley and then reconnect the battery with the GPS drive connected). This might force the OBC to find the GPS computer as a device on the car, if the nav computer is NOT faulty, you will get a line on your screen next to Telivision and Aux Vent saying (Navigation GPS) or (Onboard Navigation), if you click it and the nav is working you will see a blank screen with one message in the left upper corner stating (No CD/DVD in device) that is all. try to get the CD/DVD for your location and good luck.

You haven't a DVD drive, it's a MK3 (reads only CD).
But I see you have an old software version (old style menu), first try to update to 3-1/63 ;)
