MK4 -- 3D view capable ?
The nav system in my 2005 4.4i seems a bit archaic -- is there an upgrade to the system where the screen has the ability to show in 3D or is it always just a boring flat aerial view?

4-1/00 (which means 4-1/100) is the current version, which supports 3D view. |
Sorry in advance for the Noob commentary -- but I have only had the X for about a week -- So, if I update the software in the nav to the current disc, this should offer some new perspectives to the current layout? I think the last time this was updated was when the car was first purchased from the dealer in 2005...I would imagine there has been some new touches added to the nav software since then, right?
Thanks again. |
The changes all depend on what version you have now. Have a look in the top right of the Set (or Settings) screen. This shows your current SW version
Report what SW version you have. |
Nav version is probably out of date...
4-1/50 Is the newer software something that will provide more details and better views or should I just retain the version I have?:dunno: |

Since then there have been 6 newer releases, with the current release of 4-1/100 which appeared in March 2008 You will get new features, 3D view, updated graphics, postcode search, and the ability to read new dual-layer DVDs if you upgrade to 4-1/100 I recommend upgrading |
Is there a recommended vendor for the upgraded nav disc other than a BMW dealer? The cost seems a bit high at $200 for the map disc. I know navteq is the spot most people are directed to but does X5world have any arrangement to offer members discounts anywhere that you know of?
Thanks, J |
You are getting confused, the map disc has nothing to do with whether the system can view 3d perspective, this is a function of the systems firmware.
Think of a PC, the firmware is the XP operating system, and the map disc is an application that runs on top of the OS (like MS word). You need to either go to the dealer and ask them to update the nav firmware or download it from here and burn it yourself. Yes, the map discs are expensive but that's the price we pay to own a BMW. The firmware is the XP OS and the MS Word application The map is the file that is opened by the application Just as MS Word can open different Word documents, so can the navigation system open different maps. Just close the current map file (eject the map disc) and open a new map file (insert a new map disc) |
Am I able to burn this with a Mac Computer? Again, any insight to the tech aspect of this would be helpful. I appreciate your patience with me thus far and all the questions, I just want to get the most out of my X. Is there a step by step instruction guide on the site for this process? I have no problem spending the $ on the disc, but I would like to update the "firmware" first.
Thanks in advance. J |
