If it would take a back-up camera without needing an additional expensive video module, that would also be interesting to me.

Sure.

Purchase a brand new Mk4 nav today. It's built in 2008

Fit it to a 1994 E38. Replace the 1994 early 90's nav system

Or in other words: replace a Mk1 nav with Mk4

KIWI,
I have an 06, Mk4 ....... Where can I read about retrofitting a reverse camera. Thanks

Some guys on the e38 board at bimmerboard.com have done it. Do a search.

EOD Guy 01-15-2009 08:34 PM

Read the e38 writeup (I think it's the same one) The guy replaced his Nav module with a TV module which added a camera.....is this what you guys are talking about?

Yes but you add the video module and keep the nav unless you really don't want nav. The VM has the aux connection for the camera. Brian (Brian-BMW) has a good write up for this mode. Others have done it to.

I just bought a JVC NX7000. It has DVD/mp3/divx/.wav/wma playback, an sd slot and Navigation as standard features, but the features are expandable to include satellite radio, backup camera, bluetooth capability, steering wheel controls, and integrated iPod control as well.

The msrp on crutchfields.com for this unit is $1000 but I got the unit as well as a backup camera, bluetooth module, swi-pac steering wheel control module, ipod control cable, AND a 6 disc DVD changer on ebay all for less than $1000 shipped!

I bought 4 Sony 600w speakers as well but that was kinda unrelated to the core stereo purchase but even these were only $110.

Check this unit out. Its the only double din unit with Navigation AND a removeable faceplate, a necessity living in Brooklyn.

Still waiting on the ipod cable to arrive before I do the install but in my research, I came across a thread here on x5world where the person said the steering wheel controls were even better than factory. There were buttons that were previously non-functional that the person was now able to assign functions to them (ie the phone button but the person had no in car phone).

Any pictures of this JVC unit in an x5? What sort of bezel did you use? I've been considering a new GPS/dvd/bluetooth/ipod upgrade for a while but I definitely want steering wheel control..
