Z4 Navigation Maps
 
Hi guys,

New member here. I am about to purchase a 2004 BMW Z4 and have a few questions.

My main concern is that the car itself was imported from the UK (i am in australia) so it has the UK maps. The maps seem to be on a dvd. Can i just replace the map dvd with an australian map dvd or do i have to replace the entire sat nav?

Also the odemeter is measuring miles. Can i change this to kilometers?

Hi,

The UK nav system is identical to the Australian nav system

Simple insert the latest copy of the Australian map (as used in an Australian E46, E38, E39, X3 or Z4 - all the same system) and it will work.

As for the Odometer: This may or maynot be possible.
At any rate, if possible, it is tied to the standard configuration for the country.
BMW don't like changing country configurations, and also it is very rare that it is done. So your local BMW place may not have the experience. You will have to ask

At worst case, you'll need a new cluster. Then you get the additional benefit that the speedo will be in kmph as well

WARNING: clusters need to be properly programmed to hold the correct vehicle configuration and odometer dat. Use the BMW diagnostic system to do this.
Don't get a 2nd hand cluster, it is dificult to program to your car

Thank for the prompt reply. If the GPS unit works then i'm extremely happy:) My brother has an E46 so i'll test it out using his maps.

The UK cluster has both miles and kilometers on the speedo which i'm fine with. The odometer i guess i can live with. Guess i'll just have to do the math for my log books:)

Since i'm relatively new to the bmw scene and z4's is there anything i should look out for before purchasing?

I recommend going to a BMW or independent BMW specialist for a pre-purchase inspection on the mechanical side.

I know the audio/nav system electronics in these cars very well.

Here's what to look for to see if it has any extras:

Look for these options in the main menu of the nav, they were all extras:
1. DSP (more powerful amplifier, better speakers, includes subwoofers)
2. Telephone
3. Television

FYI: Television and Telephone can be readily retrofitted, the car will be cabled for Telephone if not present now

Make sure the CD changer is fitted and working

Current nav software version is 4-1/100 (displayed as 4-1/00). Shows in top right of Set screen. If older, this can be easily upgraded by yourself, no special tools required.

You really want the multifunktion steering wheel (steering wheel with buttons for stereo)

Some X4s have PDC rear, or front and rear. Optional. Look for the sensors on the bumpers. This is a good option to have to protect bumpers, especially in the X4 which is harder to judge size.

Most if not all X4s have the runflat tyre system with the tyre failure indicator - look for the symbol of a flat tyre on a button next to the gearshift

Other options that can appear:

headlight washer/cleaners (good in Europe, not much value in Oz)

boot mesh net to hold down loose items

Look for complete set of manuals, tool kit, and KEYS!
You should have 2 x master keys, plus a valet key. Maybe an emergency key too.

IMPORTANT: Look for a dot next to the odometer readout. This is the tamper indicator and highlights if the odometer has been altered.

You can also get the chassis number (last 7 digits of VIN) and go to BMW and get the original factory option list printed out, as was fitted to the car in the factory. This is worthwhile.
