OEM MK4 DVD Retrofit questions

I am on the verge on buying a used year 2000 e39 530i sports. The thing is the car came with OEM 16:9, TV Tuner but does not come with SatNav. What parts do I need for SatNav retrofit? I know I need the OEM MK4 but what else? Di I need a new Wiring Harness?

Chasis No : CE60027

Thanks in advanced.

Ask your dealer to print out the installation instructions (EBA 0001617) for retrofit kit P/N 65 90 002 860. This is the kit to add nav to a car which has monitor and TV already. You probably need a bracket and a GPS antenna/cable and probably some harness wiring. It is probably a kit for a MKIII, but that is the same as for a MKIV. Minor correction - the part number is 65-90-0-002-860.

You can read the installation instructions here (PDF).

Thanks a million!

Any idea how much these will burn a hole in my wallet?

No problem!

I don't believe the complete kit is orderable under that part number any more, since the NAV computer in it is obsolete. Here's the list of what was in that kit. I don't have pricing for Malaysia, but here's the pricing in Euros for most of the parts (the 0.00 parts are price unknown, not free):

Note that this parts list is for a kit with a much older navigation computer which uses a separate GPS receiver. You'll want to delete that GPS receiver from your order and use a MK IV navigation computer, 65 90 0 404 346. Note that BMW generally only sells the NAV computers as part of a return of the same model ("core charge"). You may need to find the computer from some place like Bimmernav.

certify, before you start to buy any parts you need to do some more research. The basic parts you need are some nut/bolts/screws/brackets/cable ties. The main parts are the Nav (I guess you have the MKIV?), GPS antenna and it's cable called cable "B" (these are cheap on ebay and I have a lead for that) you can also get them from the dealer at higher cost, the main adapter cable called "A" in the instruction PDF (the P/N listed for the kit is for a MKII/Trimble GPS module and there is a different P/N for the MKIII/MKIV and I think it is 61 12 6 907 844 and should still be available at the dealer). the separate GPS recever module in the parts list is not needed as your nav has a built in GPS, NOW the big question is whether you actually need the "C" cable. Study the instructions carefully and maybe get a WDS wiring diagram DVD or wait for some comments from this board. Kiwijochen is very familiar with the RHD e39 and its wiring and probably can tell you. There are more wiring diagrams available on bimmerboard for the full retrofit kit of a nav and TV for the MKIII (MKIV).

This is a very easy add-on job. Parts you need are:

1. Nav computer - Mk3 or Mk4. Try to get a Mk4

2. Nav computer bracket plus the 2 or 3 nuts/bolts to bolt it into place

3. GPS antenna + cable, generic antennas work fine, or you can get the original BMW antenna. Antenna commector is standard SMB.

4. Nav add-on cable loom. Available on ebay.

5. New CD-changer + nav trim panel, or just cut a rectangluar hole in your existing trim panel.

The add-on is very simple and highly recommended.

Of course, you'll also need the local map disc for your area. Malaysia is so small I believe the map comes on CD.

The instructions for installing a complete MKIII nav and monitor in a non nav/tv car is in the retrofit section of e38.org. I has a lot of f wiring shown and probably clarifies the location and connections of the "C" cable.
