Swapping the front screen on Mk4 Nav from tape to CD version

Please can someone tell me if it is possible to swap the screen from an e46 widescreen Mk4 tape version to the CD version?

The reason is because the screen on my CD version is scratched and I can pick up a tape version easily on ebay.

If it is possible please can someone give me the instructions on how to do it?

Many thanks in advance.

MK

there is no CD version from this screen...

doesnt it depend on the car? I have an e46 with MKIV nav and have a CD player behind the screen...

BTW, the screen is detachable, right? I think you can replace just the screen...

In an e46 this is possible, X5 its not. See:

Yes, perfectly possible.
The E46 was available as Tape and CD.

Simply remove lid, remove complete screen and swap over
Then reassemble.
Not hard.

I have an e46 M3, 2003 model.

If you have an e46, its a piece of cake. BMW made a factory Nav for our cars with CD.

FOr $800 this is a 5 minute swap to get you a CD player:

BTW... My CD / Nav unit is from a 2006 and it doesn't play MP3s... Yet my business CD from 2006 does in my other car... so apparently the Nav didn't get the MP3 capable upgrade... Not sure if anyone can confirm this...

looks like it comes with casette, CD and mini disk

Wait... Are you talking about simply replacing the screen with a new one?

Or are you saying an X5 screen will fit onto an e46 CD player brain, thereby allowing an OEM cd player solution for the X5?

thx

There isn't enough available depth inside the X5 dash to fit the CD player version (it is deeper than the tape version). That's the reason the X5 didn't get the CD option in 2003 when the E46 did.

Gotcha... I find it simply amazing that in 2000 an X5 wasn't coming with a CD player. I mean music stores in the states flat out stopped selling cassettes in the early 90s... Heck, the Honda Civic I drove in college back in 96 came standard with a CD player...
