Help and advice with nav mods
 

So I am working on some navigation mods.. basically want to do video on nav screen and reverse camera.

Ive already purchased the video module (OEM) and I just bought an adapter that was suggested here on forum.

Since it has inputs for audio video in / out and camera in I figured it was the best option. So question i have is do i need the TV in Motion adapter harness aswell or does this do it as well? I saw that on ebay for approx $110 as well. It's the blue connector.

Also - Here's how i plan to hook up the audio video - I'll need the AV cables for my ipod and run to the front of car etc. For my audio from ipod i'll need an alternate source correct? I have intravee with 410c which has aux that i'll run to the front as well and set that mode for my audio.

Am i on the right track - will i need TV in motion as well? I don't think I want to add a DVD player for front.. i have the invision headrests, i wish their module box had AV ins/outs to it as well and not just the headrests- would make it simpler to display the video that's on nav on headrests as well.

I actually have a new control box that will help your needs a little better!

TV no longer works in the US (no digital). The camera is still OK and the AV.

You don't want the front screen video to appear in the rear.

Here's how BMW planned the system:

Front screen:
Displays video and nav info as required for driver, displays current menu and controls.
TV signal switches off when driving for regulatory compliance.
When watching TV/DVD (assuming of course your screen is enabled for video in motion) and at the same time navigating to a destination, the nav instructions will cut in and show the next instruction when necessary.
Screen switches off when ignition off.

Rear screen:
Displays TV entertainment info for the rear passengers.
Nav info does not interrupt the TV
Driver controlling the audio at the front does not interrupt the TV
TV keeps on operating for up to 15min after ign off, allowing TV to work when turning engine off at petrol stations, railway crossings, etc.
TV automatically works all the time, no cutout when driving

The rear screen is best used in conjunction with the rear MID as well.

This setup allows children to watch TV in the back whilst parents observe the nav map in the front.

It's exactly what I used on some long trips and works well - especially with headphones! I had nav on the screen with CD audio in the front, and children watching DVD movies with headphones in the back

So you have to consider this: do your rear seat passengers want to watch the nav instructions and see all the screen changes as you select items on the front screen?

THE TV will work in the US but only if you add a digital converter whcih even Radio shack is selling these days.

They don't work because they don't have a diversity tuner. J A M E S on bimmerboard has tried 2 or 3 units and as soon as you gain a little speed they crash. Euro hybrid video modules have a Microtune diversity tuner which works for the European DVB-T system but not in the US. Mobile TV is a little different than just playing a DVD disk it seems. I am unhappy because I just lost my TV.

They correct statement is:

They work when standing still, but not when moving, due to limitations of ATSC.

So they work.
And remember that TV-in-motion is not allowed in many countries... I'm not sure of US-law...??

And it's not the lack of diversity tuner that is the problem - it's the technology in use (ATSC). Diversity helps but simply having diversity tuner without other black software and hardware magic won't fix it!

Jochen, you know I am disgusted because the US had to do something different from everyone else LOL. Thanks for giving a more correct technical answer. My converter box in the house, and I am in the city, is not that wonderful. Glad I am on cable and am only experimenting with the box.
