Mexico GPS Data for Navigation System

Hi all! I am new here and LOVE my Mini that I bought a month ago.

I have a problem with the In dash NAV system that I hope someone can help with:

I am planning a trip to visit friends in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. I live in Virginia in the US. I have contacted both my Mini dealer and NAVTEQ and have been told that I cannot have access to the Mexico data. Basically, the official story is that the DVD players are coded by region and won't play the Mexico DVD, so therefore they won't even sell it.

Hmmm...I really don't understand the concept of turning away business, and I cannot get a straight answer as to WHY???? this is set up this way. After all, the DVD I own says right on the cover "North America." Last I checked, Mexico was in North America. It's not until you open the DVD that you see the "coverage" map. Canada: included. But no Mexico. No one seems to know why, even though people IN mexico get it standard. A bit of an aggravation after spending an extra $2000 on the NAV system.

So, I have 2 questions. WHY? and HOW to get around this? Thanks so much for any and all responses. I have GOOGLED, YAHOOED, and searched forums to no avail. Thank you again!

Michael

What a load of bollocks.

There is no difference in the nav computer - simply insert the map that contains Mexico and it will work.

The "DVD coded for region" thing refers to video DVDs and not map DVDs.

Start googling for "BMW nav map mexico"

KiwiJochen, I am in complete agreement with you. And your suspicions are mine as well. But since they won't sell it to me, I'm having a hard time checking, just to see, if it works. I'm not beyond using a bootleg copy from the internet at this point, but all of my searching and torrent'ing has not produced a DVD yet. I'll repost any new news I find, and I thank others in advance for doing the same!

Thx again!
Michael

They are not suspicions.
They are fact.
The nav drive is identical all around the world.
Any BMW car with the same nav drive can read any map (for that system) from any country
I've personally used Singapore, European and USA maps in the same nav drive in the same car. Without changing a thing.
Just insert the map and it works.
Fact.

That's a different issue :-)

Try getting the partnumber, and then ordering the "part" :-)

Not being a smartazz, but Yahoo Maps, et al, show route(s),
and maps of the area. Imo, GPS maps, of any brand, are ok for
getting one to the state, county, city, but are suspect on
the local/address level. Of course a good old paper map gets
one "there", too...

And, once you are there, your friends should know the "spots"
and local routes. G-jara is a fabulous city/area, imo. Also, home
of tequila, including many outstanding, very local "micro brews",
we never see here in the US.
