MK3 / Mode2 / Custom Update

I have the MK3 navi system and understand that it requires mode2/Form1 burning and that my nav will only update to v22 (3-1/63). Been doing TONS of reading on this site. Great website btw.

I'm trying to change a few things using Navtweak namely the splash screen. I've followed ccfj1's thread as best that I could. When I re-inject the modified navboot file back into the .bin file and save it, it converts the image to mode1. Why is that?

I have downloaded all the recommended software, UltaISO, imgBurn, etc...I also own MagicISO and NERO and have fooled around with those in this process as well. I cannot for the life of me make the final image work?!

I've read many things about how this is done but I can't get them to work at all. What is this software ccfj talks about: mode2_converter? I can't find a download for that.

I've tried to create many custom CD images to no avail. Some got stuck and I had to do the hold button trick to get the CD out. Navi crapped out. I got it back up again using the v21.1 image floating around here. I'm just stuck. I can't get the mods I want installed mainly I think because my CDs are burning in Mode1. I did manage to get MagicISO to burn a disk straight from the program as mode2 but it failed too. I think because of the TOC or something.

Thanks all!
Brian

I have a link to the modded version of the mode 2 converter I'll PM it over to you.

its a bit more complicated to make a mode2 but easier (if you know what I mean).

basically unzip a normal v32 mode1 image and then make a dir on your pc and call it say c:/v32

then open the v32.iso image in ultraiso (or similar) then drag and drop all the contents (inc dir structures) into the v32 dir.

Then edit the navboot or usr_load files in the normal way (navtweak), once done.

run mode2converter and drag and drop all the files from the v32 dir into mode2converter, then make.

This creates 3 files, a .cue a .bin and a .toc, open the .cue with imgburn and hey persto, one mode2/form1 mk3 OS image.

Sounds like a plan! Thank you for the clarification.

ccfj1 09-16-2009 01:32 PM

I'll try and find the mode2 zip file mate:)

Monnone 09-16-2009 02:12 PM

Fantastic!

Monnone 09-17-2009 08:19 PM

Another quick question. I've read to use the 'navboot' file located here:

Code:

\V_2\RR\0101\BMWC01S\app_sw
But in the Procedure.txt file in mode2cdmaker says for MK3s navi's use 'usw_load' to modify located here:

Code:

extracted\Mk3\0116\BMWC01S\app_sw
Which files should I modify?

Thanks!
brian

ccfj1 09-18-2009 02:44 AM

For the mk4 the top one (navboot) and for the mk3 the bottom, (usw_load).

Also you may need to edit all the usw_load files in the 0103, 0116 and 0127 dir depending on your type of car and the coding of the vehicle.

Far too hard

Just drag and drop in and out of MagicISO, that's what I did

MagicISO keeps the image in Mode2/Form1 format

ccfj1 09-18-2009 04:04 AM

Not for met it don't, it always converts to mode1.

KiwiJochen 09-18-2009 04:14 AM

The trick is this:

If you open a Mode2 ISO image, edit it, and then use SAVE it stays Mode2.
But if you use SAVE AS it converts to Mode1

So copy and rename the ISO before opening, then always use SAVE.

Worked for me reliably with my Mk3

ccfj1 09-18-2009 04:17 AM

Ah right, I only have mode2 images in .bin (.cue and .toc) format, i'll have a look round for a mode2 iso, thanks Jochen.

Hello All

First I want to say what a lot of info on this site wauw!!:wow:
After a lot of reading and trying I still can't figure out what my problem is, I have an e39 with mk3 nav in it and I'm trying to change the lng to dutch by renaming the dutch file file from nl_f to d_f in langmk3/501,
so far no problem
I use the mode2 day/night V32 image from ccfj1 and updated my mk3 and that worked ok (great that nightview colouring b.t.w.)
I've opend the bin with ultra iso and changed e.g. the splash screen and then clicking "save" it saves the file to mode1
I've also tried to save all the files to a dir. and then use m2cdgui to make it mode2 again and burn it, but it still doesn't work the mk3 keeps saying put in a correct software cd (I use navcoder and i-bus interface to trigger the lng changes)
What the heck am I doing wrong I've burnt a lot off coasters lately
Hope someone can help me

Thanks Frans

My computer isn't working with mode2cdmaker for some reason. I get the error to add the mode2cdmaker.exe file to the gui directory when I try to make the image...but the .exe is there?! I don't get it. So I ditched that method as I think something is up with auto-launching exe's with DOS or something.

To KiwiJochen's method: I open a mode2/Form1 image in Magic ISO, extract files to modify, use navtweak, add modified files back into Magic ISO and simply save as suggested to maintain mode2/Form1. The image is indeed saved as mode2/Form1 but it never works in my MK3. The disc does NOT get stuck though (like a mode1 disc). I have to end up loading and older image that always works.

What the heck am I doing wrong?! I'm about to ditch this mod! lol

FYI, I just tried mode2cdmaker on my work machine. The program works fine...so my home PC needs a tune up! If I get time I'll try to make a modified image here at work and test it.

The name of the output file is to long, that why you get this error.

Monnone 09-18-2009 03:57 PM

I tried "v32" with a volume name of "NAV_SW"? It failed at work as well. :S

So it's not my home computer after all. Funny thing is when I try to dump random files and folders in the program to get it test it works. But it fails immediately with the real NAV extracted files...

Monnone 09-18-2009 04:05 PM

Ahhhh. I think I figured out what you are saying. I moved the extracted image structure to the root of my C: drive since the path name would be pretty short. Before, I had the directory on my Desktop so invariably the PATH to the extracted image ended up really long. Image was made without error. I'll test it in my car in a bit.

Thanks for the help!
Brian

Check TOC is the same and make sure file system is the same. Sometimes MagicISO wants to change things.

To know how it should be set, record the TOC settings and the file system settings of an original Mode2/Form1 ISO before you start playing with it.

Thanks for the advice!

I actually got it working using the mode2cdmaker method!

ccfj1, if you don't mind and have a little time...do you have any tips in regards to colors? I'm only interested in changing the interface colors, not the nav. The nav is your dark modified one. ;)

Which parameters should I start with? I see a TON of color settings but have no idea where to start. This would REALLY be nice if we have an emulator of sorts.

Hi guys,

just joined this site. So I have a E46 325 i and crashed my cd based MK3 which had 3-1/50.

Now that I know that I need to burn the cd using mode 2, can someone please post fresh links to download 3-1/63 and also help me with other softwarres required to burn the cd on a Macintosh?

Thanks much folks...

Monnone 09-27-2009 09:18 AM

You can download any of the newer versions as they all will update UP TO 1/63. Here is ccfj1's customized image...I have this one:

Dear Brian,

Thanks for the link. I downloaded it to my Macintosh. Now how do I burn it in a mode 2? The software I have is Disk utility of Mac. Do I need to download any other program?

Thanks much

Monnone 09-27-2009 02:16 PM

The image should already be in Mode2/Form1 but I can't confirm that it'll work. The burning software might give you some information that the image is indeed Mode2. I'm not positive on a Mac how to check though...

Hi KiwJoch
have searched and tried most stoof on here regarding the mk3 nav I have burnt the mode2 and has worked with the downloaded copy but with a landrover splash
tried to change the splash. and now black screen.
Can you tell me where to put the converted navboot of where do I at least put the new Gif
cheers

KiwiJochen 06-08-2010 02:31 AM

Just use the standard OS. Then you won't damage anything.

This is because you have saved the image as a mode1, never ever put a mode1 disc in a mk3, never assume that saving back a mode2 image will save it as a mode2, it won't, it saves it as mode1.

There is a thread that tells you in detail how to do this.

In brief;

Mk3 nav computers don't use the navboot file, they use the usw_load file from the mk3 dir.

Download a OEM mode2/form1 v32 and try an resurrect your crashed mk3, you may or may not be able to do this, it's 60/40 against it at the moment.

Here is a mode2/form1 OEM v32 that might help.

I edited the sw_rel.tbl and usw_load file in this iso file. I used magiciso..

When i try to burn the iso file after saving, i keep getting W 15:36:21 Miscompare at LBA: 74744, Offset: 2072, File: \MK3\0116\BMWC01S\APP_SW\USW_LOAD burning it with imgburn..

Any thoughts.?

BTW. I opened the iso file with magiciso, copied the two files and inserted them in magiciso before choosing save..

If making a mode2/form1 I use mode2cdmaker mate, I have problems when I try magiciso, so I don't use it.

Not off the top of my head, when you edit the 2 files are you using drag and drop (to a folder) then using a hex editor then drag and drop (from same folder) back into the image?

did you try a crc check on the new USW_LOAD file?

Quote:

hmm, that should have worked...

Send me the splash (and any other mods) and I will make you a new OS up and post a link.

ekvals 07-01-2010 01:01 PM

1. I tried mode2cdmaker before. Never got the hang of it. But well worth another shot.. can you use mode2cdmaker to extract the files to be edited.? Or do you need another prog.?

I tried burning the isoi file without opening and saving it with magiciso, and this time it was burned without errors. So it seems clear that magiciso is causing the problem. I have windows 7 64bit. Donn't know if that matters.?

2. As you could see. I used the drag and drop technique when editing the files. I did not do a crc check. Not sure how to...

Hi all!
I'd like to downgrade my MK3 to v17, because i can't upgrade my voice files at all. I tried to change a dir, modify lng and sw files, list of voice and everithing. My Mk3 always shows, "no language files required" (or something like this)
Now, i try to downgrade my Mk3 to the basic. I downloaded the V17, and v17.1 to, but the magic iso, and Deamon tools can't open it!
By the way, a wrote it with Imgburn, in 1x speed, but my MK3 split it out.
The V17 need navcoder?
Thanks: B.

KiwiJochen 07-06-2010 02:10 PM

2 ways to force loading of languages:

1. language sw release must be different, or
2. language must ve different

The nav will not load new languages if they are not different to what is already loaded.

And of course, you must tell it eg with NavCoder as to what languages should be loaded.

Mode2Cdmaker with gui doesn't work with Windows 7 64bit, because there are no VB runtimes for 64bit. Anyone got any ideas?

ccfj1 07-24-2010 04:14 AM

?? It works one my win7 64bit mate, run it in compatibility mode (select app, then right click, then properties, then select compatibility mode (windows xp sp3). and apply.
