Got a "programming error" on sw update

Hi All,

I have been reading on this forum from before I got my 02 M3. It came with a MKIII, but I replaced it with a MKIV right away. When I first installed it, I dowloaded and burned the v32 sw, and then installed it using instructions from here.

Everything worked well, no issues.

So after doing more reading, I decided I needed a custom splash screen on mine. I got NavTweak and magicISO, then went to work.

I moved in the new picture, saved out the ISO, burned it, and tried to install. It didn't work. After more reading I realized it was because the sw version was the same as what I had on there and wasn't updating.

Read more, got a hex editor, and per ccfj's (thanks btw, your contribution on here is huge) changed the sw to 1010 instead of 1000 which it is in the hex on the 2 .tbl files.

I went out to install that disk, and part way through, the screen said that it had a "programming error", and that the update failed. :dunno:

Screen went black after that and hasn't been back on. I burned a stock copy of the V32 sw and tried putting that back on, it didn't work though.

The stereo still works fine, when I put in the v32 disk, the screen flicks, but nothing appears after that.

Cliff's Notes: MKIV Screen is black/dead after botched SW/Splash Screen update attempt.

What is the standard operationg procedure here as to how to get this thing back on it's feet?

TIA

Marshall

From what I have read, I haven't found anything specific about getting the "programming error" but most people who have had problems with sw updates and gotten similar symptoms to me have tried just using different, older versions of the software.

Maybe I will try that?

revert to a standard, non-hacked good quality OS disc

Thanks Kiwi, I was hoping you or ccfj would chime in :D

Does it matter which version I use? Not sure if I need to go back a step in version to get it to recognize the new disk or should it pick it up even if it's V32?

Also, I can't seem to get the disk to eject now... Will try more after work.

Thanks again, and also thanks for all your contributions to the site here Kiwi, great stuff

Just read this post: http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/...need-help.html

Similar problem to mine, looks like I just get to try out a few different discs, both older and V32. Doesn't seem to be a clear cut solution though.

Still haven't been able to get the disk disk I have in there out yet either.:dunno:

MConstant 05-03-2010 09:28 PM

Got the disk out, tried a known good V32 disk, nothing happens when I put it in though. Screen just stays black.

I guess I will try to do an earlier version instead. :dunno:

Just tried V31 on a CD burned with imgburn and it worked! So now my nav is working again, big relief there.

I am going to put the splash image I want in a V32 iso, do the regular steps, and I should be good to go right?

KiwiJochen 05-04-2010 12:35 AM

Well done!
Remember, V31 and V32 contain the same OS for the Mk4 (4-1/100)
So it doesn't matter which you use.
But remember also that the Mk4 only reflashes when the new OS is DIFFERENT to the existing loaded OS.

Remember to stay within the boundaries of splash screen size (in bytes) and format (in colour depth) to prevent OS corruption

Vielen Dank Kiwi!

I need to now change the version number using the hex editor so it will take the image. I have a feeling that I did this wrong originally however which was the problem in the first place.

I originally wanted 3 things:

1. New splash screen (which I got from the splash screen thread btw)

2. I want the option of having the voice command lady be in German. Mine has USA, E and F.

3. I wanted the warning screen gone.

I have figured out that I need to do some software reverting to get the warning screen gone, and frankly it doesn't really feel like it's worth it.

The voice language thing is a bit quirky it turns out, because I would want the USA to be all English, but if I put the German voice on the E or the F as an alternative, then the menus and such will be in E or F, which I don't want. I also know that I have to get NavCoder and the ibus connection thing to actually change languages.

I actually just thought it would be fun to have the lady speak in German sometimes, but having the menus would be fine too.

So for now I guess I am content to just try to get the splash screen on there and figure the rest out at some point if ever.

It's fun tweaking around with this thing, not sure if its worth it though :D

Thanks again for the help.

If you want the car in German, then change the loaded languages to include D, eg: USA, E, D
Then select D and everything (not just the voice) will be German.
By doing this the proper way you avoid having to hack the languages

Using NavCoder, change Region setting from USA to Europe. Warning screen disappears, note you also loose any other USA-specific features, like the Emergency function.

It sounds like you had a problem with either the burning or a corrupted navboot file (what version of navtweak did you use)?

What splash did you use?

Follow Jochens advice and change the language in navcoder, that it way it works properly as OEM.

I am pretty sure it was a corrupted navbootfile. I tried to alter the version number using the hex editor that you recommended, but my guess is that I didn't do this properly somehow. I wonder if that value being messed up could have this result.

I used this image (from the splash screen thread):

http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/...y-splash_1.gif

I would have to check the NavTweak version I used at home, but it was the latest one from the sticky link on here.

I will probably end up giving the hex editor thing another go, but I wish I knew what I did wrong first..

This stuff is fun but nerve wracking :D

So I am still trying to do this but having the same issue. When I try the new CD with the new version of the SW I get this screen:

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...photo-61-1.jpg
Here is what I am doing:

Opening ISO of V32 using MagicISO.

Pulling out the NAVBOOT file from V_2 > RR > 0101 > BMWC01S > APP_SW folder.

Opening the NAVBOOT file in NavTweak 2.6

Going to Images > rombitmaps > image 14 and replacing it with a new picture (I have tried 2 of them, both working .gifs of the correct size from the splash screen thread)

Saving the NAVBOOT file with NavTweak, then replacing it in the ISO image in MagicISO.

Then I am taking out the SW_REL.TBL and LNG_REL.TBL files from the BMWC01S folder in the image.

Opening PSPad, opening one of the files in it. Right click > hex edit mode.

Editing the file like so:

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...at125101AM.png

Doing this for both the language and the SW file.

Saving these to the BMWC01S folder in the image.

Saving the image using MagicISO, then burning it at 1x on ImgBurn.

When I go to update the car, I see the SW version update as 10.10, so that looks good. Then I get the screen I showed above. Then the screen is black and the Nav is dead until I use a stock V31 disk that I have to bring it back to life.

Am I missing something or doing anything wrong that would cause this?

Thanks guys

KiwiJochen 05-11-2010 04:28 AM

You should not change the version number of the language file unless you made new language files.

Remember the language files are stored in a directory structure that reflects the language file version number.

So leave the language file version number alone!

ccfj1 05-11-2010 04:29 AM

^ agreed,

Also, you seem to be doing every thing correctly, however, you may want to burn using imgburn and select the SLOWEST rated speed of the blank cd disc (not x1).

Only use magiciso to make the image, use imgburn to burn it.

MConstant 05-11-2010 04:47 AM

Ok thanks guys. ccf I saw in an older post of yours to edit both the language and the SW file so that's why I did that.

Will try again now with only modding the SW file.

Thanks again!

MConstant 05-11-2010 05:15 AM

Sigh. :(

Just tried again without the lang table modded, got the same result.

I see the intial screen with the desired version number on it:

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...photo-62-1.jpg

But that screen is only on for a second before it gives me the software error screen I posted above.

I am on a MKIV, in an E46 M3, and on software 4-100 (although I am using a V31 disk to bring my nav back to life after every time I brick it ;)

I just can't figure what I am missing here. :dunno:

I think I am going to try to mod JUST the SW version number, no splash screen or ohter changes, that way I can start to narrow down where I am going wrong here.

Any input is appreciate, thanks as always guys.
