VIN CODE and VEHICLE TYPE
 

HELP,
I purchased from ebay a mk iv sat nav which seems to hold a lot of information.But when in the hidden menu i was able to change the reg. of the car and colour BUT not able to change the vin code or the vehicle type in the telematic section

Does anyone know how to do this or do i have to take it to BMW

help would be much appreciated

You can change it with NavCoder.

It needs to be encoded, which can be done with a GT1, at the dealer, and apparently with NavCoder as well, but I can't confirm that as I have no personal experience with NavCoder.

The BMW dealer would probably just charge 1 hour labor to do it, or if you can find a person or independent shop in your area with a GT1 to do it.

The dealer can code only brand new MK4 module. GT1 can not change VIN in any used module.

NavCoder is perfect tool for this pourpouse and the option to change VIN is in free version....BUT, I see no reason to change the VIN in MK4 unit if your car is allready codded for navigation. Drive like that and don`t spend money for nothing ;)

P.S If you have bought this unit from Bulgaria, you could ask the seler for VIN and model : ).

A dealer GT-1/DIS/Progman/etc. can code a used MKIV. I have seen it done first-hand and I have done it myself. There are a few modules (like the IKE, LKM) in that can not be coded used, but the MKIV nav computer is not one of those modules.

when i go into the secret menu it has stored already in there that the mkiv belonged to a X3 and it also has a different vin code. AND WHERE CAN I BUY DIAGNOSTIC CABLE TO RUN FROM PC TO CAR(SQUARE PLUG BELOW STEERING COLLUMN)

If you plan to use NavCoder, then you can build a simple interface yourself. Or, you can buy a great one that is already built from IBUS Interface for BMW cars. I recommend the latter-- it is what I have. The NavCoder I-Bus interface connects to your I-Bus, typically at the CD Changer plug. It does not use the OBD II plug under the steering column.

You can get a BMW diagnostics cable from a few suppliers in China like this one Ediabas OBD2 Interface obdchina: auto diagnostic tools expert. You did not mention the year and model of your car, and that is important to know whether you would need the OBD II plug or the 20-pin under hood plug. Also, you will need BMW's proprietary diagnostics software to use this cable.
