If you have a silver tuner under the nav then that's an BM24 (17 pin round) or BM54 (40 pin flat). It's unmistakably a regular sized headunit but with no buttons on the front. It looks like this.

There will therefore be no amp in the headunit (cos it's in the BM54), and no speaker connections behind the HU, the HU will have the blue connector.

Your speaker, CD changer and FM connections are at the amp rack.

The Dynavin 5M FAKRA cable will give you ISO sockets up front
Otherwise you are looking at a seats-out rewire job or a DICE mediabridge.

Hmmmm

I'm 90% certain there is no unit like that in my boot. The black box I referred to in my other post is about fag packet sized and originally I'd assumed it was an aerial signal booster.

Where does that leave me?

That fag packet sized box could be the GSM antenna booster/filter. It will have two FAKRA antenna connectors in black or wine colour. Does your car have a built in phone/Bluetooth?

Not to my knowledge. There is no evidence of a bluetooth kit anywhere.

Assuming I don't have an independent radio unit, does it seem feasible that I can relatively simply swap the head unit for a Business CD Radio or am I getting carried away here?

Either way, it's nice to feel like I'm making some progress.

Yes. If you have a 17 or 40 pin up front, a BMW CD headunit can be swapped in.

If you have an antenna compensator you have a phone system of some sort. Hold down the sneezing man on the wheel to see if ACTIVATE PHONE appears on the HU.

Cheers. Will give it a whirl later and report back.

Take some pics too - as long as it's not too dark to see what you are doing.

Well, I took a look at the back of the unit and now I'm confused!

This is what is in my boot. No sign of a radio unit like the one above, just the small black box above the nav unit.

This is the a close up of the little box above the nav unit.

I then pulled the head unit out and was pretty surprised to find that the unit does indeed have a single blue connector

So now, I'm stumped!

big bob 11-01-2010 06:01 PM

Ah - didn't realise you had a touring. That's an FM amp.

Your BM24/BM54 is located under the boot floor carpet.

gad-westy 11-01-2010 06:11 PM

You'd think I'd have looked for that! Ah well, it was dark. That's my excuse.

I assume I'd have a pretty horrible job converting this set up to Business CD?
