745i Navigation System
I recently decided it was time to update the maps on my 745i, which led me to thinking about updating the firmware on the computer as well, and here's where all the problems start. Looking at my VIN number, it's a 2002 made in Germany. I have the 16x9 screen, just like in this picture. I can't tell whether I have a MKIII or MKIV system. I popped open the trunk of the car, and looked at the navigation system, but it didn't resemble any of the ones on the faq. It didn't say CD or DVD either, so I have no idea which it could be. Also, when I go to the settings, it doesn't give me the code as described in the faq - I'm completely stumped. How can I tell? Also, which firmware should I get? I tried burning the v32 iso onto a CD and putting it into the disc drive, but it just spit it back out after a few seconds.

You have a NAVI01 nav computer. You can upgrade to a NAVI02 or NAVI03. Both of those are DVD-based. The NAVI02 is cheaper and easier to locate. A NAVI03 is a little more expensive and may take longer to find, but worth it for the speed and improved UI. Here is a quick post that compares them.

So I'd have to buy a whole new computer. Is it still possible to use the newest map discs? They'll have to be in CD form, right? And no firmware upgrades are possible, right?

Sorry, I got confused about what you were trying to upgrade. Yes, you can just buy new map disks. You need the CD version of the "High" disks. BMW still sells current map CDs.
Here is a post that explains how to figure out what your nav computer OS version is. Here are the steps for the Service Menu I found somewhere The newest navigation OS available for your NAV01 is 7.3.2. If you already have this, then it will not update. |
Just checked, and yes, I'm on 7.3.2. Thanks for the help, I'll try to find a "high" CD.
Also, the high maps are 6.5 gb, can this nav take dvds? |
