Navigation works and then it doesn't?
 

Hey Guys,


I have a 2006 X5 with the factory navigation unit. Over the last few months my radio and or nav would not work. Here's what it's been doing:

• The radio/nav won't turn on at all and then 15 min later it will
• The radio/nav will be on when I start the car, but cannot be operated with the knobs on the nav unit
• The radio/nav can be off and all of a sudden I'll start getting nav directions from a previous destination and it cannot be stopped
• The radio/nav will work when I start the car, but then will stop working

Thru all of this, the volume and station can be changed from the steering wheel, if the unit is on, but again, not from the radio/nav unit itself.

I took it into the dealer today and they said I need a new nav monitor at $3,100!! When I left the dealership, the unit was working fine, but after turning the car off and then back on, it was up to it's old tricks.

There has got to be an option to paying over $3K or buying a potential problem off E-Bay, yes?

That could be a power problem, like a bad battery or ignition switch.

I just had my battery replaced in July of last year, so that shouldn't be a problem. Explain why you think ignition switch?

Could be a bad connection at the monitor end or at the nav power connection.

Low power causes all kinds of odd symptoms in these cars. The symptoms for a bad battery and bad ignition switch are pretty much the same. Whenever I see a description of something strange like your car, one of my first possibilities that comes to mind is power.

you have e53, right?if so: if yo have tv module installed, try disconnecting the navigation module (ONLY after power led stop blinking and remain OFF!!!), you should see tv menu on screen (less graphics...ugly like a 386 bios screen :D), so, if all wil work ok (except navigation...) then go for a navigation module (MK4) but, maybe, only after a os refresh...sometimes it helps...the second module i suspect is the radio module, cables (cable looses , improper grounding, etc) and only at last go for a board monitor (from ebay of course...a new one is far too expansive...

One of the ribbon cables was a little loose inside the nav unit. I had taken it to the dealer (CPO) to have them take care of it, but they told me I needed an entire new nav/head unit at around $3,300 installed and that it was not covered by CPO :rolleyes: I declined the service and paid my $130 inspection fee.

After two weeks of no problems, I contacted the dealer and told them of my solution. They gladly refunded my money and apologized.

Can I install a tv module and do away with the mk3? I'm really going crazy with this thing
