Rear DVD screens
Where could I find info on how BMW wired the rear screens plus DVD changer in the rear , its because I'm wanting the nav wired up to em and them wired to the nav many thanks Paul
|
It is my understanding that the rear screen entertainment system on the X5 MK1 (what vehicle do you have?) was a stand alone system. Here are the connections available at the TV tuner.

The system works as follows: AV-OUT delivers only the TV picture from the TV tuner (or anything connected to AV-IN on the TV tuner). It does NOT show the nav screen or radio control menus (unless you have the special 760iL TV tuner, but you won't in the X5) or the reverse cam picture. The reason is: the AV OUT was designed for the entertainment system for the rear seat passengers, and they can control the AV device connected to AV-IN (in those old days, a video recorder) which now could be an iPod or MP4 movie player. The original BMW system used headphones for the rear seat, which were also driver from the AV connections. The Audio on AV-OUT is a constant level line-out audio, so the screen needs a volume control. The AV-OUT remains on the Television channel regardless of what the front screen is displaying, so you can have front passengers listening to radio or CD and watching nav, while rear passengers watch the TV and listen on their headphones. It works really well. |
Yes thankyou I understand what you said but when I try and wire the bk DVD player to the front nav screen it flickers all the time proper crap picture and same in the rear tv up front fine screens in the rear sh@@
Many thanks again for your time and help. Paul |

The AV-IN has an isolated ground, to avoid ground loops. You need to ground the DVD player to the chassis of the vehicle. |
Would BMW have done that it was fitted by the http://tapatalk.com/mu/52848b4c-8ab4-52cb.jpg

When connecting AV-IN, make sure you connect video and video-gnd to the correct wires. Remember the isolated video ground issue Your posts are unclear as to what you are trying to do. Do fix a rolling picture problem: a) make sure monitor is set to same standard as video source (PAL, SECAM, NTSC etc) b) make sure video input is grounded properly as AV-IN is isolated ground |
Wow, OP please try to type clearly. We can't try to help you if we can't understand what you are writing.
As Kiwi says, use properly assembled cables and check for PAL/NTSC support to cure flickering. No idea what the rest of the post is about. |
Right sorry guys here goes I have nav with analogue & digital tuners , plus DVD multi changer and headrest screen (NTSC) BMW stand alone kit .
Right this is what I am wanting to do , get the tv picture to the rear screens at the moment I've cut the back of the av in/out socket in the rear , then I've found which one is (av out) and touched them two on the yellow &black cable under the seat which must send the picture to the screens , but the picture is sh@t . Right next question hope this is helping , when I touch the yellow & black cable on the av in that I've have cut off and switch the DVD multi changer on , switch the nav to av the picture is all fussy and that is it hope you can both help me Sorry about messing u around Regards Paul |
The yellow black cables you are short circuiting will be composite video and mono audio. They will both be shielded and the ground is critical. You must use the proper cables, available for pence on eBay. Search for 3.5mm to RCA.
You could consider an RCA 2:2 video multiplexer, with a set of switches. For gods sake please don't cut any more of your new car up. Your DVD player is a Necvox dva-3210. The manual is here. On page 15 you can see that between the screens and the display is an additional box that supports the audio IR and video translation duties. It may have RCA connections in/out you can utilise. It may or may not be under the boot carpet near the seats. |
Right thankyou so much shall I put the plug back on so the av in/out socket work in the rear or does it not matter now. Plus once I've found that RCA box do I still plug in to the av in/out in the rear seat area ??? Many thanks
Paul |
The rear AV IN out are connected to the NAV system. The idea will be to run a pair of cables from the AV out to the mystery box, assuming it has suitable spare AV in and AV out composite video ports.
AV Out connect to AV in and AV In to AV out. |
Big bob I will leave you in peace thankyou for all your time and info
Regards Paul |
Big bob look what I've found

OK.
First test Unplug the VIDEO OUT of the AD-6867. Check to see if the headrest video on both screens stops working. If it does proceed to 2nd test. Second test is to run those RCA video cables you bought from eBay between the AV OUT in the centre console to the cable you just unplugged back of the car as a test, using a back-to-back RCA adaptor. If you are lucky; the nav video will appear on the headrest monitors. Proceed to 3rd test. Third test is to run connect to the AV IN on the centre console and VIDEO OUT on the AD-6867. If you are lucky, the DVD will be available to view at the nav display in the front of the car. If you are unlucky, and you have PAL/NTSC issues or you cannot feed a signal into the headrest monitors, then post your results. Finally, look for 2:2 multiplexers, AV siwtches and boosters on eBay. You should be able to split and amplify the AD-6867 video signal to feed both the headrest monitors and the AV IN in the centre console. Also you should be able to buy a switch or multiplexer to feed the headrest monitors with one of two signals. EDIT: I'll leave it to Jochen to explain why and IR Tx/Rx'er needs 15 pins. I reckon it carries RGB and audio too. |
Right here goes I've been out busy sins 7am !! Ive taken a feed from the video out ad6867 got a picture on the headunit but again it's rubbish , but when I've gone from the av out in the rear seating area to the RCA cable that takes the picture to the rear screens the picture is quite good.
Will I need one of these for the video out ad6867??http://tapatalk.com/mu/021abebb-d798-dd27.jpg |
No it needs to be an amplified splitter, because the video signal is analogue and passively splitting it quarters the signal level and hence all the brightness goes.
The picture that is rubbish, is it black and white and rolling? That would be PAL/NTSC issues. According to the manual of the DVD player you can flip it to PAL/NTSC via the menu. I think Navcoder with a Relser interface can do something with the TV tuner to switch PAL/NTSC mode. |
Yes it is black & White rolling picture , I thought the nav was NTSC but when I get the picture on the screen it turns over to pal ???
|
|
Yep something like that. About £10 on eBay. Before you buy, find out how the monitors are wired. There is possibly an amplified splitter in the car already, since you have two monitors fed from one feed.
Alternatively, each monitor may have a video out, and then you would have a spare video out on one of the monitors. |
OK so one option is to go with this and this.
The splitter amp would permanently feed the AV IN for the front screen, and the 2:1 switch. The other outputs are unused. The 2:1 switch would be fed with AV OUT from the GPS. Hence front seat passenger can select AV IN to see the DVD. Rear seat passengers would toggle the 2:1 switch to see the nav or DVD. I couldn't find a 2:1 switch with a neat looking remote button, but I'm sure they exist. If there is a space video audio out on the thing that feeds both monitors then you won't need to use the amplified splitter. |
No the RCA cable coming from video out has two cables in one they just split to each screen
|
Hey I've just bought the first spliter 7.99 hope it will work , will that give me DVD player on the nav ??

Have a play with the menus on the DVD player and TV tuner to see what you can do to switch to NTSC for everything without breaking the rear screen picture. |
|
That is not the right thing for you because those AV in out pins are already in use. They connect to the centre console. You could buy it but fitting it would disable the centre console pins. It's also a lot of money for some parts that are available for pence and pounds at RS and Farnell.
|
Yeah I know but I've cut the back off the av in/out !!!!!!
