E60 K-Can to e46 K/I/D-bus project
Hi, any BMW buses guru can give me a hint about E60 D-CAN translation to E46 specific buses, the general ideea is to integrate CIC into e46. I know that has been done before, i just wonder if is so hard to do. I know that E60 gateway module can translate K-Can into PT-CAN and D-bus, also, SGM before 2007 can translate K-bus to K-Can (not sure if only several messages or any...)but i'm not aware if that D-bus signal is compatible with E46 one in both directions; in theory should be same signals as long as there are both OBD2 compatible, but i'm not sure that the exchange of data between modules is plug&play...so, if any can contribute with ideaas, please do :)

Very challenging. You must go down to protocol level and make a gateway that translates messages as required.

thanks for reply kiwi, that's the answer that i was afraid...so the only way is to make a gateway/translator for each canbus_to_kbus command...i read about that subject last days and my conclusion was about the same: there is no direct translation between buses anywhere on any bmw module so...making such a hw/sw gateway is beyond my knowledge...and, afaik, the guy who already made this scrap the project...it seems like the only way to add additional gadgets to my car is carputer with a front end sw like rr, cf and some ibus plugins and so...tough luck :)

Well, when you want to build a gateway that interfaces between two different computer networks, you need to understand the protocols and the commands to ensure the gateway supports all commands, and/or filters the commands you want.
Easy or hard depends on your personal skillset and experience..... |
I looked (briefly) at having ago at this zeronoo.
I have an e60 business nav setup (screen, controller and base unit (raido/nav unit) bought off ebay), I made up the looms and had it all working as OEM on the bench (I was thinking of using a gutted e46 wide-screen housing to mount the screen), but other projects pushed it back. As Jochen says, you would need some sort of protocol converter, I never got round to having a good luck at it. |
