Just ordered a MKIV dvd Drive.

So i f*cked up bad, and dissconnected the battery with out the dvd drive spinning all the way down to a stop, and i killed the drive, so i ordered a new drive. paid just over $700, bmw quoted me just under $4000 for a new one installed. Anyway, should i be looking out for anything while installing it? is there a DIY for this? The one i ordered is off ebay running V32 with speed light warnings. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks in advance.

just connect blue and purple connector and you are done...however, you may resuscitate old navigation unit with sw cd and inpa/dis if unit can be seen on diag sw

I've tried to bring the current unit back to life with an firmware cd with no luck. how does one go about taking out the old unit? is there a way to just wake it slide out? i read somewhere thats what those 4 holes on each corner are there for.

Cut a wire coat hanger into four pieces and shove each piece in one of the holes on the corners of the nav computer. That will release the lock clips and it will slide out. (Some times it takes some effort to wiggle it out.)

You can order just the avtual internal dvd drive for $100 with your defective drive. Check with your dealer.

does anyone have a part number for the internal drive?

Roy in GA 01-30-2012 12:27 AM

The P/N and procedure has been posted before. Try a search. I think it's in the range of $100-125.

A replacement DVD drive will probably not solve your problem. Symptoms of the DVD reader are frequent reboots, inability to read a map disk, or general slow performance and instability. If yours is not even turning on, you likely have a different problem.

That said, damaging a MKIV from a battery disconnect are very rare. Most likely, something else failed.

I got it inspected at the local dealer, and they confirmed that it was the dvd drive its self.
they put in a test one, and it worked like magic. so im pretty sure the new dvd drive is going to fix my problem.

Brian-bmw 01-30-2012 06:01 PM

Are you talking about the whole nav computer or just the DVD reader? TQ2K, Roy's and my recent posts were just about the DVD reader sub-part of the nav computer. Dealers do not typically stock those, and replacing one requires disassembly of the nav computer.

My hunch is that the dealer swapped the entire nav computer, which I agree is your likely problem.

Turks4.4 01-31-2012 01:56 AM

yea sorry for the confusion, it is the whole nav computer that i ordered.. should be here on wendsday according to Fed Ex, that with a new battery is going to put ease in my mind atleast.. ill let you guys know what the out come is once i install the nav computer.

just recived the unit, and my screen is still unresponsive, the red LED on the unit is flashing. what does this mean?

Brian-bmw 02-01-2012 09:49 AM

You got a DVD-based MKIV, correct? Where did you get the MKIV, and what are the details of the car that it came from?

There were two versions of the navigation system-- the U.S. (and I think all of North America) only got the professional system that has the full color, in-dash display. Europe got the option for a Business navigation system that had a simple text-only display on the face of a standard radio.

The MKIV is configurable to work with either system. If you got a MKIV that is coded for a radio nav, it will just give you the blank screen in your car.

If the dealer replaced the nav computer and the car came to life, then that is a pretty good indication that the original nav computer was bad and everything else is OK. So, you have two likely causes:

1) You received a bad nav computer
2) The nav computer is coded for the monochrome, radio nav configuration

Roy in GA 02-01-2012 11:15 AM

Many years back I bought a used MKIV from Germany. It turned out to be coded for monochrome. Brian used Navcoder to recode it to color nav. Been fine since then.

The unit is off of a 2006 4.8is from the states (i live in Canada). the seller agreed to send me a new unit and try that one. But what does the flashing red LED means?

Brian-bmw 02-01-2012 08:15 PM

The LED is just a disk activity light. It indicates that the unit is actively seeking or reading the map disk.

Does the unit have a sticker with the original car's VIN? If it does, you can enter the last 7 characters of the VIN on this site, and it will tell you the model and region of the donor car.
