MK3 to MK4 Upgrade by replacing DVD unit

I read through the laser repair DIY (http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all...-nav-unit.html) and am planning to use it to fix my dead laser on an mk3 unit in my 2002 M3.

I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade my MK3 to an MK4 by just replacing the DVD drive inside with an MK4 version (PN 65 83 9 241 764). This is the DVD-M3-4.6 drive.

Would this work or are there other differences between the MK3 and MK4 other than the DVD drive itself?

Thanks.

No.

Considerable, they are completely different modules, the only thing they share is the what they look like.

Different hardware and different software.

Got it, thanks :)

Do you know if I could use the DVD drive in an MK3 at all? Seems that it may not be possible to replace just the CD drive in an MK3 unit. Even if I can't upgrade it to MK4 just by swapping drives my laser is busted so I'd at least like to get my MK3 unit working again.

No. It is impossible to use the DVD drive in an MK3 at all.
I recommend to buy a MK4 unit at e**y. You will love it. The difference to MK3 is big.

Thanks, I looked into my upgrade options and personally don't think spending the money to get an entire MK4 system (excluding the screen) is worth it. For $100 I would do it but most of the used ones I see for sale people are asking $500-600 for what amounts to a 10 year old navigation system. For $875 I can get a Dynavin Android which is far superior to an MK4 system and will still maintain the OEM look.

True, but it is a newer Gen navigation system and has loads of features over the mk3.

"Far superior" !!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I don't think so mate, its cheap Chinese crap, it's build with the cheapest components at a cost, it has an awful slow, bug ridden GUI and half the "features" don't work, forget the OEM cd changer interface and the BT phone interface, they are shocking, no caller ID, signal dropouts, and crap connection issues, the ipod interface is a joke.

It has a mickey mouse GUI that looks like a 4 year old using crayon's has been let loose on it.

Sure it looks good on paper, but the actual item is utter rubbish.

To be honest;
I did a swap for 2 weeks ago. I found a MKIV unit for € 250. I did a recode with navcoder, while it was coded for a E46 arrow screen. And this weekend I have sold my MKIII for € 150. So effictivaly I have spend € 100 for this upgrade.
New firmware and NAV charts loaded and now all is up to date.
