NAV rebooting

In my newly acquired 2002 X5, the navagation system shuts down and reboots every once in a while. It can resume guidance once rebooted, (after about a minute). I could be wrong, but it seems to be related to hitting bumps in the road, so I'm thinking either a loose connector somewhere, or the CD is skipping???

Anyone have an idea of where I should start to look to solve this issue?

is the Nav disk original? or a burnt copy? is the firmware the last one for the MK that you have? those are the things to get out of way before going into the more complicated troubleshooting, and the wiring is a more involved process than just SW upgrade...

The NAV disk is an original.

As far as the firmware, I don't know how to answer that question. This is all new to me. Can you tell me how to identify the firmware version?

on the main menu screen choose "settings", then look at top right corner... there will be a number, something like 3-1/63 or something. there are many posts that say which version it should be: 1, 2, 3 or 4 mean MK1, MK2, MK3 or MK4; 0 or 1 mean 0=b/w screen, 1=color screen; and 63 means the firmware... I think MK3 firmware development stopped at 63, MK4 - at 100 (shown on screen as 4-1/00). check the Nav forum for correct numbers and detailed explanation...

OK, my Nav unit says SW 3-1/50.

You are not up to date on the OS. The newest is 3-1/63. You can get a Ver. 32 disk from the dealer parts guy for about $10 and up date the MKIII and that might help your problem.

TerminatorX5 09-20-2012 12:36 AM

:iagree: make sure that the dealer understands that you are looking for the OS update disk for about $10 (part # 01 59 0 141 891 index Y) and not the 2012 Nav map disks for $200... It took me 10 minutes to explain it my parts guy, until i just ordered from an online supplier...

Could you share the name of your online supplier? Been looking for one. Thanks

TerminatorX5 09-29-2012 10:33 AM

There are several that I order from, some of them are dealers:

ECStuning.com
koperformance.com
bavauto.com
pelicanparts.com
bmwoffairfax.com - dealer is local to me, I order small stuff online for later pickup
getbmwparts.com - BMW of Silver Spring, in MD. dealer (I got the Nav update CD there)
bmwofbloomfield.com - BMW dealer in NJ, very competitive prices

I also use digi-key (electronics parts supplier) for small electronic parts, such as connectors, pins, relays - digikey.com... one part i buy from them, that is very handy is part # A28327ND, a pin socket for various connectors used in BMW.

This list is not all inclusive and I do not endorse any of those suppliers, I am sure other folks will be able to chime in with their own experience...

Thanks. Just ordered the nav update disk from getBMWparts.com Tried my local BMW dealer and all they were interested in selling me was the 200 dollar map update disks. Thanks again... JAX
