Nav keeps getting lost... Receiver replacement time?
The MKIV nav in my e46 M3 has been getting lost repeatedly. Seems to be lost around 10% of the time, which is just enough to make it useless to nav anywhere
So far I have replaced the GPS antenna twice (both with OEM), replaced the cable that runs to the antenna, and reset the almanac (repeatedly, really, since my batter is often disconnected for a week or more). At this point I believe the next thing to replace is the GPS receiver... is that correct? If so, where can I source a new one? Any better versions out there than what came with it new? Any threads on replacing it? Thank in advance! |
Most likely you will be in the market for a new MKIV nav computer. There is not a separate, external GPS receiver like with the early MKI and MKII nav computers. Since the GPS receiver is an internal component, you could probably harvest one from a dead MKIV someone is selling. Otherwise, you will probably just need to get a good MKIV and start over.

I have seen the GPS modules in the past on ebay and bought one once for a guy in Scotland. It is easy tp get to, on the rear right side of the MKIV. Has a couple of cable connections IIRC. About the size of a credit card. The one I found was from a surplus parts company on the west coast. I will see if I came dig up the name. Search for it on ebay. Was not expensive. Or search for some of my OLD posts here.
