BMW Nav MK2 Issues

Hi everyone

I have a 2000 E46 with an MK2 Navi and non-widescreen unit.

I am experiencing some issues with the radio part of my Navi and the symptoms dont seem to exactly fit anything i have found while searching

My radio is VERY temperamental and basically doesnt work. I have the following symptoms:

When starting the car in the morning, 70% of the time, pressing the power button doesnt do anything. This includes the little orange light failing to come on to the right of the button. The screen doesnt show radio info either.

If it does come on, either there is no sound or the radio only works for 5 minutes or until i hit a bump in the road. The light stays illuminated and the screen shows the radio info but no sound.

Pulling the fuses allows me to use the radio again but not for long

The very interesting bit is that if i put the climate control on HOT (32 degrees), it starts working again after a few minutes and will stay working until the car stops and the dash cools down.

I have tried disabling RDS so the bus doesnt get overloaded with no luck

I am 99% sure i need to replace the system but thought i would check unless i am missing something

Any ideas?

based on the symptoms, it seems that the issue is with the radio module and not with MK2.

again, going off your description, it feels as if the electromechanical connections inside the radio (soldered points) may have deterioted to the point, where external forces (bump on the road) will make or break electrical connection, or the environmental influence (heated dash) will expand the connection to make proper electrical circuit.

The unit needs to be either replaced or repaired. Was the unit water damaged? Does E46 keep the radio unit in the trunk as the E53 does? if so, check for water damage. also, the radio itself should have its own fuse located on the body of the radio module - not that it matters in this particular situation, as the radio is working sometimes anyways, but just in case if you need it for future reference...

there is guy somewhere in UK who fixes these radios and upgrades their firmware, i just was asking him a question very recently... i will find his info and post it for you...

Wow, thank you so much for the quick reply

I have not seen any water damage but will have a good look in the boot (trunk) when I get home.

The navigation seems to work ok. I didnt realise there could possibly be a separate radio module somewhere. I will have to see if i can locate it
