We are coming up on April Fools day...

I think that day would be a very good time to remind people to check their emergency road kit.

So, what is in your kit RIGHT NOW? Don't guess.

I just checked, I have:
  • A jump box that I move from car to car... (I need to plug it in and recharge it).
  • An air pump w/red lamp... (It's too bad a kit doesn't exist for tapping into the on-board air pump so you can fill your tires.)
  • A tow/yank strap.
  • Heavy duty jumper cables.
  • A plug in emergency lamp.
  • Fuses.
  • A three inch sharp knife.
  • A small socket set with metric tools.
  • Another small socket set.
  • A mini-combo open/box wrench set.
  • A driver set with torx, philips and standard screw heads.
    • I need to replace all those tool sets above with a custom set just for the X5. One that will stay in the car and only for emergency. (It probably should include the above mentioned screw driver heads. a set of 8mm to 19mm sockets, along with a set of combos that 5ange from 8 mm to 17mm?)
  • Heavy duty work gloves.
  • Light duty mechanics gloves.
  • A camelback with a quart of water.
  • A fold up rain poncho.
  • Standard Issue multi-bladed Boy Scout Knife
  • A large bottle of green slime.
  • A schrader valve tool.
  • The old fan belts from my last swap.
  • A road atlas book.

What I just removed from the car kit... (These show me I should have checked my kit long ago.)
  • A 110 power inverter. I used to carry this when I carried a laptop around.
  • An old can of fix-a-flat.
  • A small notebook. At one time I think I intended this to ba a log book.
  • A Delorme bluetooth GPS receiver. From the days when I carried a Window PDA.
  • Another knife.
  • An exercise Jump rope(?)
  • Two bic razors... I think this was in case I went somewhere and needed to be "presentable" after a week or so on the road. I no longer care about that.

I used to carry, but need to add back in...
  • Old upper and lower radiator hoses.

During the winter months I also carry:
  • A heavy coat - even though I live in SC, I travel the country.
  • Ear muffs
  • Lightweight but warn gloves.
  • A full face wool cap
  • Cable chains for all 4 tires.

Awesome reminder and great list! I've been meaning to add stuff like this to the back of my X. To help me finally get around to it, I've just ordered one of these from Amazon:

In addition to your list, I'm planning to keep a couple of 3 day rations and some Mainstay or Datrex water packets. The water packets are nice because they are more stable in heat and cold than other water storage options. I'm also going to keep a change of clothes (some old jeans, t-shirt, socks, and underwear).
