Will out-of-state tickets count as points on my NY license?
From the DMV FAQ: New York DMV does not record out-of-state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions, except for out-of-state alcohol or drug-related violations (e.g. DUI) and moving violations committed in Quebec and Ontario. Therefore, except for violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your NYS record for out-of-state violations. However, if you fail to answer a ticket or pay a fine for a moving violation in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin, your NYS license will be suspended until the ticket is answered or the fine is paid. A driver from any state, except the six listed above, will have his or her license suspended for failure to answer a moving violation summons or pay a fine in NYS. If you are convicted of an alcohol or drug-related driving violation in any state, your NYS license will be revoked for at least six months. Otherwise, except for convictions in Quebec or Ontario under special agreements, out-of-state traffic convictions are not recorded on NYS license records and do not carry points. That's no guarantee that your insurance company won't hear of it though. you're good, this is from the NY DMV site: http://www.nysdmv.com/dmvfaqs.htm#tickets again, your insurance company might not like it if they find out, so it's best to not make any changes to your policy that might cause them to run your DMV record.

/\ just like what gresch said, other than drugs/alcohol related, it doesn't transfer over. I had a speeding ticket in NJ a few years back and all I did was pay a hefty fine. The points never transferred over.

see thats what im praying for, i had one also 3 years ago almost same road and same over the limit same situation, i was the only one on that stretch and didnt see the guy in either situation, but this time around i really didnt mean to speed i was sorta "lost" and was looking to find an exit... supposedly got clocked at 30 over thats a total of 2 tickets recless and speeding for a total of 11 points in which case if it would transfer i am as they say el scrudo.
thanks guys, just to be on the safe side i'm going to call the dmv to verify because someone told me that they transfer and really screwed up my night yesterday. |

Points may not "count", but I had a "crossing the yellow line" tick way back in about '95, in NY, (I was going around a stuck snowplow and our local grumpy cop wrote me).
Then, in late '01, that ticket "showed up" on the DMV system of North Carolina when I was changing states and getting an NC driver license. I was surprised and impressed; it was not "held" against me, but when I smugly informed the hillbillyheaven DMV lady that I had not had a tick in years, she rotated her screen to show me, and there it was.
