Horrific Plane Crash in Maui at the BMW dealership lot!

The small air ambulance plane crash-landed right on the BMW dealership parking lot just 3 hours ago. Pilot and 2 Paramedics killed. The Store is about a mile away from the airport.
Just came back from the site to check out the area but access was already restricted and the place was swarming with cops.

News script here: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar.../br/br06p.html

Will post pics tomorrow

Damn. I hate to hear about a plane going down, let alone an air ambulance.

I'm very sad to hear about the crash and the loss of life.

At the risk of sounding stupid, I didn't know Maui had enough people to support a BMW dealer. Would it be more like a BMW/Chevy/Buick/GMC/Saab/Toyota/Kia dealership?

On a more positive note, thank god your X wasn't in the shop...

How is it driving a BMW on a beautiful island like Hawaii? Thats my ultimate dream. Carving up a windy road leading to the summit of a Volcano with the ocean in the background...

Maui has about the population of a decent city on the mainland. The bmw dealership is quite small. they pretty much have a couple cars on the lot and if you want one they just order it. I believe thats how they do it? Correct me if im wrong ed. I'm pretty sure its a stand alone dealership

Some pics I picked up from our paper online news attached.

To asawadude and VF1-X5:

Maui's population is only around 120,000 (in 1999) and at any given day there would be about 44,000 tourists. I often wondered how car dealers can do good business here but we do have stand alone BMW, Lexus, Acura (under construction next to BMW), Toyota, Honda, Kia, Audi and the usual Chevy , Ford, and Chrysler dealerships. I heard that Jaguar and Mercedes will be opening stores here during the next two years. Someone told me that middle class families here have at least a Bimmer or a Lexus. There might be some truth to that. In my neighborhood (not one of the expensive developments), almost every other house has an expensive car.

The BMW dealership parking lot is usually packed with new and CPO inventory, probably close to 50. That plane crashed right into the middle of that lot. When I passed by last week, there were three 650 convertibles in there and you could see the rear of one of them on one of the pictures.

This tragedy could have been worse. There are 3 restaurants within 50 ft from the crash site and it's along Kaahumanu ave, one of the main roads here. Costco is less than a qtr. mile away. It's just a blessing that the accident happened after 7 pm and here in Maui, you wouldn't see many cars or people in that area of town. You will find them at Costco!

I used to fly occasionally in an air ambulance helicopter, and my wife was always worried until I got home. This is why. The folks who do it for a living are truly heroic.

I haven't taken my X5 to the Haleakala summit yet. I'm more anxious to drive it to Hana, spend the night there with the CEO and drive back on the other side of the island, stopping at all the waterfalls along the narrow unpaved roads. However, my favorite Sunday fun drive is still on my other "X" - a mint 91 Jag XJS black convertible (now powered with an awesome Chevy 383 cid/400hp stroker motor) through the back roads of West Maui all the way to the North Shore area, a good one hour drive with incredible oceanviews.

Thanks for the clarification, Ed. I didn't know Maui has become so urban. I've been to Honolulu and Hilo back in the early 80's. My vision of the neighbor islands is that they are rural and laidback - almost like country living, but I'm sure the pace of life has quickened since then.

Again, I saddened by the loss of life. Our work done by our emergency workers is so very important; to lose any of them is a tragedy.

Regards, Mike
