Actually, kind of sad, some M3 owner on M3forum gets "run-overed" by a fellow X5 owner--the lady proceeds to back into and run over the front fender of an E46 M3....

Crap! That looks painful to me and it's not even my car. I'm glad that it wasn't a pedestrian behind the X5 driver rather than a car. I guess she didn't have PDC either.

Honestly, PDC is helpful but it's also quite dangerous. I was talking to a friend last weekend who has PDC on his M3 but not on his SUV. He was telling me every time he drives the SUV he doesn't look behind him and has gotten lazy relying on the PDC. Not saying that everyone gets lazy with it, but there is still potential for that to happen.

I definitely agree with that. PDC is not and should not be a replacement for actually looking before and during backup. I'm sure many people rely on it out of habit and laziness. I use it almost purely for parallel parking and getting in and out of tight spots. I also think it's helpful in situations where you do look behind you but an object is below your line of sight. The reason I retrofitted the PDC kit was partly because I wanted to do the project and partly because I had a situation where I did look behind me before I backed up but some a-hole had put a low parking barricade behind me and I did not see it the way I approached the vehicle.

You can't count on the PDC to be your 3rd eye on the back of your head. I was mowing my lawn one day and decided, heck, let's just take a break and park the mower right outside the garage, right behind my X5. Then went in, took a shower, and wife asked to get something for her from the store. "Sure, honey, brb", got in the X5 and backed up. BANG! Backed right into the lawn mower handle and scratched the lenses of the brake lights. No warning whatsoever from the PDC.
