I used to have the Thule trunk mount and it worked OK. Anything that's gonna touch the paint will scratch it...doesn't matter how clean your car/bike rack are. And if you have a light color car, the rubber thingy on the bar across the trunk will make a mark on it as well. Also, you have to really tighten down on everything (which is somewhat hard to do sometime), else, you'll risk scratching your car more. So, as you can see, I'm not a fan on the trunk mounts at all. I would recommend finding a Thule lift like the one that BMW offers for the X5 (see the X5 accessories catalog for a picture). The Thule lift is not shown on their website, but I remember seeing one on a printed catalog I had a few months ago. This should make mounting you bike on the roof much easier.

I've always hated the trunk mounted bike racks. I always worry that they're not sturdy enough and that my bikes will stratch the paint. I still have one for my wife's Accord, but we almost always use the X when biking.
Thats why one of my first mods was to get the hitch for my Thule bike rack. Its very secure and its far enough away from the X that you'll never have scratch issues.

I got the Thule hitch mounted one.....DOH. I should have gotten a Yakima one.
The Thule hitch one worked well, but a more cumbersome design than the Yakima one. Of course, the hitch rack design can be different nowadays. Anyhow, I haven't used a trunk mounted bike rack in years....I used to have one for my E30 3-series, but you risk scratching the trunk paint with either the bike or rack. I remember scratching the paint off the trunk lid spoiler with the bike pedals  Anyhow, since you have a S4 wagon, why not just take off the front wheels and load up the bike in the wagon portion? I wouldn't risk a trunk mounted rack option on your M5 IMHO. Anyhow, if you know what you want, here is a great mail order place for bike stuff (both Thule and Yakima stuff).  I wouldn't risk a trunk mounted rack option on your M5 IMHO. OBTW I have one and you can have it if you wish. It's not any special brand but we used it on some of our other cars in the past.
