If it's like other SONY players, the format that the media files must be converted to on the player is proprietary. I'ld stay away if that's the case.

Lots of recording media is proprietary. This device is also now offered with Mac compatibility. Aside from that it is it's professional application that interets me. This format has been and is still used by recording industry professionals for it's ability to accuratly reproduce what is recorded.

The question is do you want to re-format your media to work on that device (and buy the additional HD space to store it on so that your only copy isn't just on the device) and if you do re-format, do you really want multiple copies. If you don't want multiple copies, then you have convert, and what happens if you replace that device with another device that doesn't read the format?

I have to agree. Though that device looks really slick, Sony has maintained its rep as a format/digital rights monster, esp since last year's double root-kit violations. I haven't bought a Sony CD since then, much less a player. I imagine those moves lost them far more money than Sony ever saved in their attempts to avoid pirated copies... Just my .02.

I'm not sure what you mean, but consider this: Most people who involve themselves in field recording or running a recording studio use different kind of media to accomplish different tasks. Having said that no additional hard drives are required

Once recording is complete, connect the Hi-MD unit to your Mac's USB 2.0 input and launch the Hi-MD WAV Importer software. The program couldn't be simpler. Tracks show up in the order they were recorded, and you can rename them using your Mac's keyboard before speedily transferring them to your computer.

To upload tracks, select the desired recordings in the Hi-MD WAV Importer window and drag them to your desktop. They will be saved as DRM-free WAV files, which can then be converted to any format supported by QuickTime. Reformating your hard drive not required.

it says

The MZ-RH1 is a digital audio player that can play files downloaded in LinearPCM, ATRAC (ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus) or MP3 format, or which have been recorded onto the device from a live music session.

but i stil dont like the idea of having to a 1g disc to constantly format thats why i have stayed away from sony's products they dont offer enought space for teh price.....
