Hawaii man contracts flesh eating disease after falling in harbor

http://starbulletin.com/2006/04/05/news/story02.html

A 34-year-old mortgage loan officer is near death with a flesh-eating disease after falling into the polluted waters of the Ala Wai Boat Harbor last week, according to his friends.

Friends of Oliver Johnson said his doctors at the Queen's Medical Center diagnosed him with necrotizing fasciitis, a Group A streptococcal infection that "destroys muscles, fat and skin tissue," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

WOW. What do you expect when you pour over 2 million gallons of sewage into a harbor and then fall in with an open cut.

Nasty illness. Poor outcomes, even if you live.

They dumped in 48 million gallons before those 2 million. I've never heard anyone evacuating that much sewage into a harbor/sea even in emergency situations . Something like this was undoubtedly bound to happen.

And yet another reason why I never travel on boats, or even venture near any ports or docks.

I am a "land" person. I guess my probability is lower for this disease.

No matter how bad things get in your life, there is always someone else who has it worse. I can't imagine him not disinfecting the wounds or not going to the emergency room to clean himself up rightaway. (read motto #2)
