It may be true that politicians and other leaders seem unwilling to at least jawbone more Americans into giving up their SUVs and Hummers in favor of more fuel-efficient cars. And it may be equally true that suing OPEC under U.S. anti-trust laws may be smart politics, but what about actually telling voters that they, too, have to take some responsibility for the problem? That may be a good idea if we have something pratical to replace them with.
Seems to me that government is always stepping on the toes of anyone who makes progress towards energy efficent transportation. Theres always an excuse but the bottom line is always self interest on the part of all involved. There are just too many opinions. Can you just imagine everyone saying. "Hey thats a great idea let's ALL do it" I don't think so. People are always going to be people argueing what color to paint the Titanic when the ship is steady sinking. At least that's IMHO.

If you adjust for inflation, the average gasoline price is still cheaper than it was in 1981 which in current dollars peaked at 3.07/gal. The oil market is a global market, so almost anything happening anywhere in the world can drive up the price for us all. And conserving fuel consumption doesn't drive the price down, it only reduces the frequency you have to pay that price.
