It depends on which country it is in. In countries like Egypt, Jordan, Iran, and Turkey, where most people are Middle Class and live happy lives, the people think he's nuts. Not to the same extent as Westerners do, but it's fair to say he does not have a large support base in these countries.

But in the countries where anti-American feelings are more common, and people tend to live in terrible conditions, like in Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and even Pakistan, the people love him and he is considered a hero for being the only one who stands up to the United States. He enjoys approval/support ratings around 90% in those countries.

People who are happy in their every day lives tend to frown upon extremism. People who live terrible lives and experience things such as starvation, lack of infrastructure, and perpetual war -- people like that tend to look towards anyone who offers a solution, no matter how radical or extreme the ideas are.

Did you ever wonder why the Palistineans elected Hamas to power a couple of months ago? Live a few days in the West Bank and you will understand very quickly. Ever wonder why the German people elected the Nazis to power in the 1930s? Read about how "pleasant" things were in Germany in the 1920s. This attractiveness towards radicalism is not unique to Muslims -- it is rather predictable. Given certain living conditions, people of all types react very similarly.
