So where are all the Iraqi citizens in outrage over other citizens attacking the troops? Oh, not there....useless group of people.
I don't know how the troops keep their cool and don't just open fires on all these a-holes.

People do not like foreign troops on their own land. You would not like it if every day you had to drive through several check points in your town with troops from another country guarding them, and then once a week you would hear that several people from your town were killed because the soldiers guarding the check point made a mistake and shot up their car.

While the "liberal" press in the US has long ago stopped reporting such incidents, if you read any of the local newspapers in the Middle East, it has become almost a weekly occurance that US troops shoot up a car or van full of women and children at a checkpoint because someone made a mistake.

That does wonders for their popularity in the local Iraqi community.

It's been 3 years that we've been there, it's 120 degrees in the summer, and half of the population still does not have their electricity restored to pre-war levels. That means no air-conditioning, no lights, etc. Most do not have clean drinking water. Most cities have curfews around 8pm at night. People are not allowed to come out of their homes after that time or else they will be shot. Unemployment is around 50%. Crime levels are rediculously high -- it's like the Wild West there.

They are pissed. The sooner we get the hell out of there, the sooner they can fix their problems and get back to normal life. As long as we stay there, things are just going to get worse.

Local press in the Middle-East, that's funny considering most press in the ME is run by the government.

And it's one thing to not want troops in your land, it is another to cheer on their demise and attack members simply going to recover bodies.

The discussion of media bias can be an interesting one. Imagine this:

In 1944, in the closing days of WWII, a German newspaper reports that the Nazis may have been responsbile for killing as many as 200,000 Jews in the death camps.

The Russian and Polish media are outraged at the bias of this newspaper as they used the words "may have" and their figure of 200,000 is rediculously low. They accuse the newspaper of being a Nazi propoganda tool.

The Nazi government is outraged as well and accuses the newspaper of spreading rediculous "conspiracy theories" of German death camps. They accuse the newspaper of spouting anti-German propoganda and being a mouthpiece of the Communists.

Now the question is, does this newspaper have pro-Nazi bias, anti-Nazi bias, or are they "fair and balanced"??

Think about this example next time you hear someone claim the American press has an anti-American bias. They are bias for sure, but not anti-American. The "fair & balanced" middle in this country has just become so far skewed by propoganda, that the public no longer has an idea where the real "fair & balanced" middle is. Any media source not reporting extremely pro-Bush propoganda is seen as being anti-American or having a liberal bias.

BTW, most of these weekly stories of shootings at checkpoints can be found in media all around the world. They are not vague stories either, but give names, pictures, interviews with witnesses, etc. Stories like this were reported regularly by US media during the first year of the occupation, but have been absent from American newspapers since then. It is not because these incidents stopped occuring.
